Restaurants’ costs have risen faster than inflation since 2019. They pay higher costs for labor, food, packaging, insurance, construction, etc. They now contend with growing demand for delivery and those charges. And they have to fund new technology initiatives.
Many restaurants are heavily in debt because of the capital costs required and the heavy presence of private equity in the business.
Dozens of chains and large franchisees have filed bankruptcy since 2023 and a lot of chains are closing units right now.
