π± About Beyond the Sidelines
We created Beyond the Sidelines to make space for better conversations about what shapes sport beyond matchday.
Coaching. Leadership. Wellbeing. Governance.
Learning is stronger when itβs shared.

Managing expectations as a parent is a crucial factor in shaping both the relationship with your child and their experience in sport.
Being aware that our role as parents shifts over time can help alleviate potential issues along the way.
@itsagamefirst Really like this a graphic! Definitely something more parents need to see and help them reflect and understand their role in a childβs sporting journey.

Most children donβt play football on a pitch.
They play it through noise.
βPass it.β
βGet rid.β
βDonβt lose it.β
βBoot it.β
βKick it long.β
βMan on.β
βTackle.β
βRun.β
βMark up.β
βStop messing.β
βFocus.β
All at once, from everywhere.
Coach β’ Parent β’ Sideline.
Hereβs the uncomfortable part, every voice thinks theyβre helping, but when everything is urgent, nothing is clear.
When every action is dictated, nothing is learned. So what does the child do?
β Stop deciding.
β Start reacting.
β Play safe.
β Get frustrated
Not due to lack of ability, but because the environment interferes with their thinking and decision-making in the game.
We say we want confident players who make good decisions, then build environments that reward obedience. Thatβs the contradiction and it doesnβt show up in the short-term. It shows up years later when players stop trying things they havenβt been told to do or worse quit the game.
If you stripped the sideline back to encouragement, positivity and freedom. What would your players actually do?
Positive Pedagogy frames coaching as a social, experiential, meaning-driven process, not just instruction
Coaches act as learning designers, fostering autonomy, decision-making, and understanding
What resonates in your practice?

Don't underestimate the power of simplifying tasks and modifying equipment.
Tailoring these to your players' skill levels can accelerate their learning

Every session matters.
Take a moment to reflect:
π What are you reinforcing?
π What are players experiencing?
π What impact are you leaving?
Small shifts = big impact.
