This Streptomyces granimilatus decided to become two different variants a few weeks ago and has doubled the work I have to do. This strain is modified to produce a cryptic antibiotic but it happened in the negative control too, although the orange colonies took over on that plate
Six months into 2023 and this is my ranking of films I saw in the cinema so far (I wish I saw Pearl and Beau Is Afraid but I missed them):
1. Evil Dead: Rise
2. Asteroid City
3. M3GAN
4. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3
5. Scream VI
6. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish
Do plasmids fight other plasmids? 🧵
So happy our preprint is out!💥And yes indeed, we uncover that type IV-A3 CRISPR-Cas targets other plasmids!

Anytime you think you understand #viruses, they get weirder.
Meet Jingmen tick virus (JMTV), the 1st multipartite virus of primates discovered.
What's weird about it? Imagine a group of people who travel everywhere together, but in different cars. That's the JMTV genome.
Best thing to start a bank holiday weekend with!
Let PhD student Sanjeevani Panditharatne (@ScienceSanjee) from the Space and Atmospheric Physics Group (@IC_SpaceAtmos) sweep you away to Norway 🇳🇴 where she's staying up until 6am to study cirrus clouds!
@enkidu360 @Myst1249@Rainmaker1973 There's evidence that ionising radiation can change the electron spin resonance of melanin and increase its capacity to reduce NADH by 4x. There's also evidence that it plays a protective role in preventing DNA damage.
@Myst1249@Rainmaker1973 I feel like it's more that we know they're there, and we know the radiation has a positive effect on their growth. But we can't say for sure what that effect is or that they're "feeding on" the radiation or how they would do that. I've only had a quick look though I may be wrong.
@Myst1249@Rainmaker1973 So the fungi are definitely there, probably growing better because of the radiation, but nobody has yet shown with definitive evidence that they are using radiation as an energy source or how that works.
@Myst1249@Rainmaker1973 As far as I'm aware melanin rich Cryptococcus neoformans fungi were found at the Chernobyl site. Additionally tests show melanin rich fungi grow much better in radiation than melanin poor and some grow better in high radiation than low.
It can seem counterintuitive... but clouds play a part in global warming!
A team of researchers travelled to Andøya, a remote Norwegian island inside the Arctic circle, to better understand the how clouds affect global warming.
