I recently joined more than 100 parliamentarians in writing to the Foreign Secretary, urging the Government to stop the so-called "Great Israeli Real Estate Event" from taking place in London.

Despite those warnings - and despite serious concerns that allowing the event to proceed could place the UK in breach of its own obligations under international law - the event was allowed to go ahead. That is deeply wrong.

An event facilitating the sale of property in Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory should never have been allowed to take place on UK soil.

Throughout the 2026 World Cup, Iran’s participation was hampered by severe restrictions imposed by the US, one of the co-hosts.

Due to visa denials, the team was refused a permanent base on US soil, with Mexico ultimately offering them a sanctuary in Tijuana. Players were permitted into the US only hours before each of their three matches and forced to depart immediately after the final whistle, a schedule that severely affected their ability to recover and prepare. These obstacles were compounded by visa denials for a large portion of their technical, medical and administrative staff, leaving the squad without essential support infrastructure.

The evidence shows that Iran was not the victim of a chaotic draw or a bad refereeing decision; they were the victims of a host nation that weaponised its borders to dismantle their competitive integrity.

I never met Alison Balharry but I do remember exchanging some messages with her many years ago.

It was clear that something wasn't right with Yes Scotland during the Referendum campaign. I see she said it was Angus Robertson who deleted the Yes Scotland database at midnight on 18th September 2014. Angus has in a previous CV he worked with MI5.

Because authoritarian drift is visible to global observers.

Because they become evidence of a suppressed sovereign nation.
It makes Scotland’s independence inevitable but harder.
Because authoritarian drift always increases resistance from the central state.

The real danger for Scotland
Not that Scotland will be criminalised.
But that Westminster will use fear to suppress Scotland’s political voice.

Not openly.
Not dramatically.
But quietly.

Through

selective enforcement
intimidation
legal uncertainty
pressure on civil society
pressure on media
pressure on activists
pressure on international communication

This is exactly what is happening
Anything or anyone can be criminalised.

Authoritarian drift in Westminster creates a constitutional vacuum.
And vacuums create space.

When a central state loses democratic legitimacy, the peripheral nation with a historical sovereign claim becomes the natural successor.

That is Scotland.
Independence makes sense.
