So I yapped again. This wasn’t what I expected to publish first after such a long writing break, but yesterday’s events riled me up to the core. I urge everyone to be vocal about this so we can actually make a change.

Be vocal about wanting creators to have a bigger cut.
Be vocal about your rights as a reader and digital ownership.
Be vocal about the wrongful practices of these companies.

They know that we can’t boycott them openly because boycotting any of these companies would hurt the creators much more than it would hurt them.

Practically in a way, creators are held hostage by the companies and the companies know it, hence why they use that to the fullest by not being upfront about the changes in operations, policies, or shut downs.

They know that there’s nothing much that we can do against them and that we’ll go with the flow ultimately. In their heads they’re thinking “The users will whine and cry for some time but they will move on to the new platform and continue a new.”

And for creators they think the similar too.

At least that much can be derived from their actions.

It is infuriating and the fact that we can’t do much about is even more disturbing but at least we can be vocal about it.

With tapas shutting down, it's even clearer how buying digital contents is no different from renting. You don't own anything but the ability to read for a limited time, and when the platform shuts down, everything goes with it. I treat buying chapters online as a way to read and pay creators for a good piece of content so it doesn't hurt as much, but the whole concept is so anti consumers I hate it.

I have no hope for the future of reading things online, whether legally or illegally.
Every site’s taken down, everybody’s using AI to do the work, yet they expect you to pay money it’s ridiculous.
And prices are so high it’s legit cheaper for me to buy it physically WITH goods.

kkp bought tapas, removed/worsened every option that allowed people without money to read legally, poured its money into taking back the IPs it already lent to other platforms (tappy, comico), beat down on original creators, spent millions fighting piracy

Even though Kakao Page will allows self-publishing, I’m not going to upload my work to that platform. What Kakao did to Tapas was unfair, and I urge authors not to publish on Kakao Page if they add the upload feature.

Because the way they handled it showed no consideration for the authors or the Tapas team itself. The Tapas staff and the Tapas Discord moderators, along with the authors, found out at the same time as the readers through that post on the Korean blog.

Finding out you’ve been let go this way is the saddest thing ever. And to the readers: please consider supporting all the Tapas authors—many of us have migrated to Pinya, so you can find us there. I also encourage you to follow all the authors on social media so you can stay updated on the latest news and more!!!

Kakao is literally saying: "We don't want foreigners, so we're going to shut down Tapas and focus on our audience in Korea." And by doing this, they're not only blocking "their content"—they're removing all foreign material from independent authors!
