Note ban was not stupid. It was EXTREMELY stupid. Here is why:-

1) Zoom in on this image: what does it say-- it says that I PROMISE to pay the bearer this sum of 1000 rupees

2) This is a sovereign promise. The line never said: I promise to pay the bearer this sum of 1000 rupees. BUT...1 day, I might ask you to get in line & change notes.

And, if you can't do it: then, well, lol.

3) The day this note was banned, this promise was broken.

Forget about whether this good/bad (outcome wise), the note ban was a disaster because it set the belief that words of the sovereign can't be trusted.

General junta can be followed by drama and movies. But institutional investors watch all these things very closely. And, make their investment decisions accordingly.

And, guess what they're showing their faith (or the lack of it) by pulling money out in record numbers.

The understanding of "Banking" as a business and sector is pathetic. The total advances of BoB is almost Rs 15 lakh crores! Rs 35,715 crores is the write off over 6 years (it is inside the article not the headline) and the Bank has recovered Rs 9,946 crores out of it (again inside the article not in the headline).

This is how Banking is supposed to work. Across the globe. And shouting scam at every Bank and every write off is foolish.

The coordinated crackdown across 14 states led to 253 detentions and more than 200 arrests, thwarting what authorities described as plans for subversive attacks around Independence Day.

But the threat we are confronting today is bigger than a bomb planted in a crowded place.

This is the logic behind what has often been described as “Bleed India with a Thousand Cuts" - not necessarily fighting India through one large attack, but weakening it from within through a network of smaller, sustained acts of disruption.

And those “cuts” do not always have to come in the form of explosions. The people arrested in this crackdown are precisely the kind of ground-level operatives through whom such a strategy can be executed from within India.

They can come through radicalisation, recruitment, online propaganda, paid stone-pelting, communal provocation, targeted disinformation, and the grooming of young minds. The objective is to create enough distrust and division that society begins to fracture from within.

This is where the idea of “white-collar terrorism” becomes important.
