About another violation of the Constitution, or how Father Raphael turned out to be an angel.
According to the Apostolic Canons, a priest who strikes a person is subject to canonical punishment and is forbidden from performing ordinations.
This took place in 1977. Father Rafail was then a very young hieromonk, recently ordained in the Pskovo-Pechersk Monastery. One day, on a sunny June morning, in the best of moods, he entered the Assumption Cave Temple to serve the liturgy. But the first thing he saw there was three drunk hooligans. They were standing next to the icon of the Mother of God, and one of them was smoking a cigarette from a lamp, laughing with his friends.
Later, according to Father Raphael, he remembered everything very vaguely. As the parishioners present at the scene recounted later, the young hieromonk grabbed the laughing smoker (and Father Raphael possessed outstanding physical strength), dragged him out onto the street, onto the church porch, and struck a blow that is still remembered by eyewitnesses...And at that very moment, Father Raphael came to his senses.
As if in a slow-motion movie, he saw with horror how the unfortunate hooligan was lifted off the ground, flew across the porch, and collapsed, remaining perfectly still...Two frightened comrades rushed to him and, glancing back at Father Raphael, dragged their friend by the arms away from the temple toward the monastery gates. Father Raphael, realizing that the worst had happened and that he would no longer be able to serve the liturgy, grabbed his head and rushed to the cell of his spiritual father, Father John.
Father John (Krestiankin) was performing his monastic prayer rule at that very hour. Breaking into the elder's cell without knocking, Father Raphael collapsed on his knees before him. In despair, he confessed his crime and began to plead for forgiveness, asking what he should do now.
Father John listened carefully and sternly said to his spiritual son:"Are you coming to me about this? It was not you who struck him—it was an Angel!"
Nevertheless, he read the prayer of absolution, gave his blessing, and sent him to serve the liturgy.
Human reason has been corrupted since the fall of man; therefore, it must be submitted to faith and revelation and thus raised up to a higher level.

🔸 July 8 - Saint Theophilos the Myrrhgusher 🔸
Today, we also commemorate Saint Theophilos the Myrrhgusher, whose name means ‘friend of God’. He was a 16th century monk who devoted his life to the Lord, and was admired by all for his great humility. St Theophilos was born in 1460 in Nea Zichni, Macedonia, to pious parents. Receiving a good education, Theophilos purified himself from every soul-destroying passion, and was filled with virtues by the grace of the Holy Spirit.
Renouncing the world, he was tonsured a monk and ordained a priest. At the request of Patriarch Niphon of Constantinople, Theophilos was sent to Alexandria to ascertain the truth of two great miracles that took place there in 1486 by Patriarch Joachim of Alexandria:
A Jew once mocked the Gospels before Patriarch Joachim for claiming that someone with faith could move a mountain and drink poisonous medicine without dying - miracles which the holy Patriarch proceeded to perform. After verifying the truth of these miracles, Theophilos completed pilgrimages to Sinai and the Holy Land, before returning to Constantinople where he served the new Patriarch Pachomios for several years.
Theophilos then went to the Mt Athos where he lived a life of asceticism and obedience at the Monasteries of Vatopaidi and Iveron. His holiness became so renowned that many sought his spiritual guidance and consolation. Manuscripts written by Theophilos bear witness to his humility, as he often said in self-reproach that he is “the sinful and unworthy one,” and a “wretch, guilty of myriads of evils!”
When Thessaloniki was deprived of its shepherd, Patriarch Pachomios wrote to Theophilos, inviting him to come to the city - his aim being to consecrate him as Bishop. The Saint discovered this plan and, to avoid the dangers of glory and pride, renounced the priesthood and was tonsured to the Great Schema, to the sorrow, but also admiration, of the Patriarch. On this day in 1548, St Theophilos uttered his final words:
"Lord Jesus Christ, receive my spirit" before giving up his soul to the Lord. The Lord glorified His servant Theophilos, as was confirmed when fragrant myrrh gushed forth from his relics.
