Batoid news feed to help focus on conservation and management priorities for skates & rays. Fisheries & Marine Policy Professional - opinions are my own.
Eagle rays are being sold illegally on the US territory of Guam - which has the only shark finning law that also covers ray parts. Enforcement is key. https://t.co/Bvv4aKgrpk #batoids#sharkfinning#FlatSharksNeedLove2
Nerding out this #FlatSharkFriday with my new #diaphonised juvenile freshwater stingray (sp. Unknown) prepared by Articulated Imagination. Here's some photos of my favorite bits 😍
Beautiful Spiny Butterfly Ray in the Mediterranean! Listed as Critically Endangered on @IUCNRedList in this region, it is one of 24 elasmobranch species prohibited under @UN_FAO_GFCM binding Recommendation. #FlatSharksNeedLove2
Boy, you’d think the black-spotted electric ray, Torpedo fuscomaculata, would be happier for #FlatSharkFriday but alas it is extra cranky this morning! (Yes I outlined the eyes, seen through the ventral side, just to show you how upset this little one is) #zapzappancake#naptime
Sometimes when you draw batoids out they look a little more 3D than 2D, a task I might add as most are flat #seapancakes, see Gymnura, and other times you get Raja; who looks like a confused derp and knows #ItsMonday.

From the field - NOAA shark research cruise out of MS - some of the catch - a great hammerhead shark, a southern stingray and a shamefaced crab still holding his snack - animals are measured, examined and released.
#FlatSharkFriday Field update: Week 4/4!
Today marks the end of 27 fun-filled days of ray-search. We laughed, we cried, and I couldn't have done any of it without this lot: @alyss_luongo, @MissBiologa, Brendon Phan, @ZoeLoffler, Tim Ross, @sawsharkman, @GrewMolly. Thanks, team!
In this new study we present preliminary insights into the distribution and population characteristics of reef and oceanic manta rays in French Polynesia based on a 18-year photoID citizen science dataset https://t.co/dadEXRhVVs
It's time to #MakeTime4Makos at today's meeting of @NOAAFisheries' #ICCAT Advisory Committee. Dr. Enric Cortes is reviewing the grim status of shortfin makos in the N. Atlantic. He chairs ICCAT's shark science group which recommends a "non-retention policy" for this population.
Kelsi Rutledge (@fishandfreckles) discovered a new species of ray called a #guitarfish from the Gulf of California-- and the way she announced it is like nothing you've seen before: https://t.co/eL279ChCHp #flatsharks
#FlatSharkFriday Field Update - Week 3/4. This week we finally got to test out the first field prototype of the @spotx_ @vemcoteam acoustic tag triggered underwater camera trap 🙌 and oh, boy did it deliver! Here is one of our tagged boys, showing his good side!
With new species added to @CITES App II at #CITESCoP18 today, total number of species listed is now 45. Interestingly many more rays (32) than sharks (13) are listed. Rays face many conservation challenges but do not get the same attention as sharks. #raysneedlove2

India🇮🇳: Critically endangered, legally protected sawfish sighted off Chennai for 1st time in decades, then killed & sold for ~$70USD. Fishers say they weren't aware species was protected. Fisheries dept has not conducted outreach but pledges to do so now: https://t.co/XZLNhYuNT0
A downward trend in U.S. Smalltooth Sawfish has reversed since the 2003 #EndangeredSpeciesAct listing. Florida's population is now considered a lifeboat & a model for the Atlantic. Keeping the #ESA strong is vital for continuing recovery: https://t.co/YlktFFpSX2 #StopExtinction
The 🇺🇸#EndangeredSpeciesAct brought the Smalltooth Sawfish back from the brink of extinction and holds great promise to help protect other threatened rays & sharks. We stand with our colleagues who are challenging new changes that would weaken species protections #StopExtinction
Good news for #FlatSharkFriday! The Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission has agreed a measure committing member govts to protect sawfishes & mobula rays (& several threatened pelagic sharks) and ban at-sea fin removal, in line w/ NGO requests. Stay tuned for text. #WECAFC
