I said no and offered to cancel the agreement.

This was often the case in academia too. Talking about family implied that you weren't adequately focused on your work. Maybe it's a side-effect of professions that expect passionate dedication from practitioners.

That is a clear example of problematic practices in this industry. People have lives and families outside of code. As they should.
