Governor Lawal Unveils Plan to Restore Zamfara’s Textile and Ginning Sector to Boost Jobs and Economic Growth

An editorial highlights Zamfara’s former status as Nigeria’s leading cotton-producing state, with 15 ginneries and the once-thriving Zamfara Textile Limited employing thousands of people. However, insecurity, poor-quality cotton seeds, and increased textile imports have led to a sharp decline in cotton production, forcing most ginneries to close and worsening unemployment and poverty.

The editorial notes Governor Dauda Lawal’s commitment to reviving the state’s textile industry, cotton ginneries, and oil mills after visiting an integrated industrial zone in the Benin Republic. The governor believes that strategic government policies, improved infrastructure, and private-sector investment can rebuild the cotton value chain, create jobs, and reduce dependence on raw commodity exports.

It concludes by urging the Zamfara State Government to match its commitments with concrete action, particularly by tackling insecurity, supporting farmers with quality seeds, and aligning with the Federal Government’s Cotton, Textile and Garment (CTG) Value Chain Activation programme to restore the industry’s competitiveness and drive economic growth.
