I am appalled to hear about the 31 sloths who died under the “care” of the not yet opened Sloth World in Orlando.

These sloths — naturally solitary animals — were put in the worst conditions possible. They were taken from their natural habitats to a packed warehouse that wasn’t properly heated and allowed for the spread of deadly viruses, leading to a stress-induced death.

Our pets are family and it’s time our laws treated them that way. Every year in the US, about 10 million animals die from abuse, abandonment, or cruelty.

Today, I announced the bipartisan Protect Our Pets Act to crack down on animal cruelty and hold abusers fully accountable.

This legislation will:
✅ Make it a federal crime to abandon or endanger animals across state lines or on federal property or land like airports, trains or national parks.
✅ Close dangerous loopholes that let abusers evade real consequences.
✅ Establish serious penalties — including up to 15 years in prison for repeat offenders.

Animal cruelty isn’t just about animals — it’s often a warning sign of broader violence in our communities. That’s why we’re taking action.

In Jersey, we don’t tolerate this behavior. We fight back.

Veterinary prices in the United States are up by more than 60 percent since 2014. A survey released last year found just over half of pet owners passed on needed veterinary care, many citing prohibitive costs. Then there’s the matter of America’s besotted canine and feline “moms” and “dads” who are more and more anxious to invest in their pets’ health, paying for MRIs or procedures to fix ACL tears.

The upshot is that just as Americans cross borders and fly to other countries seeking cheaper dental and medical care for themselves, they are now doing the same for their pets. In border states, some pet owners caravan to Mexico to cut costs. Some people organize vacation around it: A hair colorist who works in Beverly Hills said her dad and stepmom in Arizona are part of a group that travels to Mexico several times a year to stock up on both human and pet pharmaceuticals. And of course, some enterprising Americans are now acting as middle men — offering concierge services to get pets across the border and back in the span of a single work-day.

The American veterinary establishment seems less than thrilled with pet vet tourism. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that only one veterinary school in Mexico meets American accreditation standards. And yet, for many of these beloved family pets, it’s Mexico or no treatment at all.

Recent research from Kyoto University reveals that female dogs actively assess human competence—while male dogs do not.

Female dogs clearly prefer approaching humans who successfully complete tasks, such as opening food containers, over those who fail. In contrast, male dogs show no preference and treat both competent and incompetent humans equally.

These findings, published in a study titled "Female dogs evaluate levels of competence in humans," indicate that female dogs exhibit a more advanced form of social evaluation, particularly when food or resources are involved. They pay closer attention to human actions and their outcomes, using this information to decide who is the most reliable partner for obtaining rewards.

This competence bias suggests female dogs are more sensitive to efficiency and social results than previously thought. For dog owners, it means your female companion isn't just loyal—she's also quietly evaluating your ability to provide. These results highlight an intriguing sex difference in canine social cognition, potentially evolved to enhance females' chances of securing resources and survival.
