🎥In case you missed it, watch highlights from the celebration of #WorldEnvironmentDay and REMA’s 20th Anniversary.
The achievements of the past two decades were made possible through strong partnerships. Together, we will achieve even more for a greener, more resilient future.
We are thrilled to share that @AWF_Official and @UNEP have officially formalized their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding signed today in Nairobi with @AWFCEO and @radhika_ochalik.
Reflecting on the journey thus far, it was clear that this agreement builds on years of shared success, focused on environmental diplomacy and elevating African leadership within multilateral processes.
By combining AWF's on-the-ground expertise with UNEP’s global mandate, we are creating a more inclusive future for African conservation.

In Rwanda’s Volcanoes landscape, conservation is being reshaped by the people who live closest to it. Community Eco-Guards, drawn from surrounding communities, are strengthening protection efforts while building trust between conservation institutions and local residents.
By combining local knowledge with formal conservation training, they are helping safeguard critical habitat, reduce risk, and reinforce shared responsibility for the landscape. This is conservation that is practical, accountable, and grounded in place.
What changes when protection is led by communities rather than imposed on them? These Eco-Guards are showing that local leadership can keep wildlife corridors functional, improve safety for both people and animals, and create credible pathways for young people into conservation work. These outcomes matter, not just for biodiversity, but for long-term stability and coexistence in a high-pressure landscape.
At the @AWF_Official, this approach reflects our commitment to African-led, people-centered conservation, investing in local capacity, strengthening governance, and scaling solutions that endure beyond projects.

Africa’s wetlands span more than 1.3 million km² — an area larger than South Africa. These landscapes are among the continent’s most critical natural assets, underpinning water security, food systems, biodiversity, and climate resilience for millions of people.
In Tanzania’s Kilombero Valley, @AWF_Official is demonstrating what effective wetland conservation looks like in practice. Through community-led restoration of the Londo River, AWF is supporting local water user associations to rehabilitate riverbanks, improve water governance, and restore ecological function across the wider wetland system. The result is a river that is beginning to recover — and communities better equipped to adapt to climate variability.
This work reinforces a vital lesson: wetland conservation succeeds when communities are not just beneficiaries, but leaders and stewards.
As we mark #WorldWetlandsDay, the call is clear, protecting wetlands is not optional. It is central to climate resilience, sustainable development, and long-term prosperity.
