There is far more to South Africa’s challenges than the supposed “inability” of Black people to govern.

South Africa was built with Black labour and Black resources. The mines, the farms, the roads, the cities—everything of value was created by Black hands, yet Black people were systematically excluded from owning or enjoying what they built.

Apartheid was not just “bad”—it was one of the most brutal, systematic crimes against humanity in modern history. Black families were forcibly removed from homes they had built with their own hands and from land their ancestors had farmed for generations, then dumped into barren “homelands” that were little more than concentration camps. Fathers were torn from their children and forced to live in single-sex hostels, working as near-slaves for white-owned companies.

The best schools, hospitals, beaches, suburbs, and infrastructure—built with the country’s wealth—were reserved exclusively for whites. Prime areas like Ikoyi, Banana Island, and even the reclaimed swamps of Lekki were seized and declared “white only.”

Yes, there is loadshedding today. But for decades Eskom and nearly every critical position in the energy sector were controlled by white executives and engineers. Only after some of them left—and the full extent of deliberate mismanagement, corruption, and even sabotage was exposed—did the situation begin to stabilise in certain periods.

During apartheid, electricity was reliable because it was prioritised for white homes and white industries. Now that millions of Black households have been connected to the grid for the first time, demand has exploded on an ageing system that was never designed to serve the majority. New power stations are being built, but progress has been slow—partly because powerful interests frustrated Jacob Zuma’s nuclear deal with Russia, preferring alignment with Western powers.

Even today, a white employee with only a matric- equivalent of WAEC often earns more and is promoted faster than a Black graduate doing the same job—because white families and networks still control most large companies and the economy.

The South African Reserve Bank? Still privately owned by shareholders who are overwhelmingly white. Many major state contracts quietly flow to the same old firms.

Some of the best government schools in places like Ikoyi still carry the Latin mottos and traditions of the white Catholic orders that founded them—reminders that the system was built for a tiny minority.

So when people who have never lived here—or worse, Black people from elsewhere—casually blame Black South Africans for the country’s struggles, they display breathtaking ignorance and insensitivity. Nelson Mandela did not have the luxury of waging a full revolution in 1994; the choice was a negotiated settlement or a bloodbath that would have destroyed the country. The same forces that assassinated Chris Hani and countless others would not have hesitated to plunge South Africa into civil war.

Apartheid was evil beyond words. Visit Robben Island, the Apartheid Museum, or any township and see the evidence for yourself. The sabotage never fully stopped; some simply changed tactics. Many who plundered the country for decades are now quietly leaving with their billions, while others stay behind to undermine a government trying to correct centuries of theft.

The struggle is not over. It just looks different now.

A grandmother from Klerksdorp, identified as Miyina Mapogo, is pleading for help in finding her missing 12-year-old granddaughter. The young girl has been missing for three weeks and was last seen in Carletonville, allegedly in the company of an older man believed to be involved with other young girls.

The child, a Grade 6 learner, was supposed to be writing exams, leaving her family deeply distressed.

Anyone with information is urged to report it to the nearest police station, contact Childline South Africa (0800 055 555), or call 074 693 3606.
