We tend to think art and science live in separate worlds. But Sheila Atim, Olivier Award–winning actress and star of The Woman King and Bruised, argues that divide is a myth that limits both creativity and scientific innovation.
Atim is both an artist and biomedical scientist and demonstrates that the most powerful art emerges when creativity is treated like a scientific experiment: a process of inquiry, discipline, and risk.
Join her as she makes the case for a new creative method, one where science and art collide to unlock fresh possibilities for the stage, the screen, and the lab.

If everyone believes their own perceptions of the world resemble reality, we can’t all be right. So does this mean there is no reality at all?
In this discussion, physicist Avshalom Elitzur and cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky explore the intersections of science, language, and whether reality and truth are something we can ever reach.

WHEN HERITAGE LIVES: TOWARDS AN EVOLVING UNDERSTANDING OF HERITAGE AUTHENTICITY
Can heritage remain authentic as it changes over time? And who decides what makes it authentic: experts or the communities who keep its traditions and meanings alive?
These questions were at the centre of a side event held in Busan, Republic of Korea during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, marking the launch of the new publication Heritage Authenticity in Theory and Practice in Africa.
Key reflections:
✅ Heritage authenticity continues to evolve beyond a material-based interpretation towards one that recognises cultural context, community stewardship and living traditions as fundamental attributes of authenticity.
✅ The relationship between tangible and intangible heritage is inseparable. Effective heritage management must acknowledge that monuments, cultural landscapes and historic places derive their significance from the traditions, knowledge systems, rituals and cultural practices that sustain them.
✅ Community-centred heritage governance is essential. Indigenous peoples, traditional custodians, elders and local communities must be recognised as primary rights-holders and active partners in heritage identification, conservation and decision-making.
✅ Outstanding Universal Value should be interpreted through diverse cultural lenses. The continued evolution of the World Heritage Convention requires greater recognition of regional perspectives, ensuring that global heritage frameworks adequately reflect Africa’s heritage philosophies and conservation approaches.
✅ Authenticity is sustained through continuity rather than permanence. In many cultural contexts, periodic renewal, reconstruction and the transmission of traditional knowledge reinforce heritage values and resilience, demonstrating that change can coexist with authenticity.
✅ The integration of culture and nature remains fundamental to sustainable heritage management. Recognising the interconnectedness of people, landscapes and ecosystems strengthens resilience, biodiversity conservation and cultural continuity.
✅ International cooperation remains central to safeguarding humanity’s shared heritage. Partnerships among States Parties, UNESCO, advisory bodies, academic institutions and local communities are indispensable in advancing conservation standards and promoting the effective implementation of the World Heritage Convention.
