News: Jailed opposition MP Christian Tadelle’s health deteriorating: Defense lawyer

Addis Abeba – The health of #Christian Taddele, a member of the House of Peoples’ Representatives detained at Kilinto Prison, is worsening, his lawyer Solomon Gezahegn told Addis Standard.

Solomon said that during his most recent visit two days ago, Christian reported his condition had significantly deteriorated. Six months earlier, both Christian and fellow detainee Yohannes Boyalew were treated at Mekrez Hospital before being returned to prison.

According to Solomon, Christian was previously prescribed liquid nourishment by doctors, which his family had been providing. However, prison authorities have recently restricted the entry of such food. “He is now in a difficult situation,” the lawyer said.

Christian had suffered intestinal bleeding that has since stopped, but swelling has developed, further weakening his health. He has requested that prescribed liquid foods be allowed into the prison and asked to be permitted to sit during family visits due to his inability to stand.

In December 2024, Christian and Yohannes underwent intestinal surgery but were transferred back to prison the same day, despite doctors reportedly recommending they remain in hospital for continued treatment. Prison authorities denied the request, saying the hospital only asked for follow-up appointments.

Christian, Yohannes, and 50 others remain in detention facing terrorism charges linked to the state of emergency in the Amhara region. The charge sheet accuses them of organizing with the Amhara Fano Unity Council to pursue a political ideology by force.

The regime's forces appear isolated and unwelcome in Amhara cities, where the local Amhara Fano forces have garnered significant support from the local population. The regime relies heavily on heavy weaponry and drones for its genocidal operations.

The Amhara Fano leaders have implemented strategic withdrawals from major cities like Gondar and Debrebrhan for the following reasons:

1 Heritage Preservation:
The regime has employed heavy weapons and drones in historically significant cities like Gondar, leading to deliberate destruction of Amhara heritage sites including castles and churches.

2 Indiscriminate Shelling:
The regime's forces have initiated indiscriminate shelling of residential areas and institutions, causing civilian casualties.

3 Escalation of Atrocities:
Reports indicate an increase in the regime's brutality towards civilians, particularly women and children, resulting in tragic massacres.

4 Humanitarian Concerns:
Amid the regime's disregard for civilian lives, the Amhara Fano have strategically retreated from cities with high civilian casualties to enable medical treatment for the injured, demonstrating a commitment to humanity.

This tactical retreat aims to prompt the regime to reconsider its genocidal actions before crossing a point of no return.
