You can pretty easily just give your heat shield more material to increase its peak heating acceptance but it’s just gonna cost mass which is why engineers seek to minimize them for LEO missions

@AlexKane_420@NASA@blueorigin It’s a lunar lander not a launch vehicle so getting to orbit isn’t what it’s doing (other than getting to lunar orbit from the surface, I suppose which is very different)

@89067321a@SpaceX This specific static fire added a minuscule amount of pollutants. The infrequency of rocket launches also means the pollution in general from rockets is minimal. On top of that tho, this rocket uses cleaner fuel than other kinds of rockets.
@IrateMaxwell@borgposting I don’t really think “the private sector’s way” is the removal of NASA/old-space. Over zealous fans of SpaceX, maybe. But I think the private sector knows and appreciates the importance of NASA and even old-space for the most part.
@salsadrunkard@borgposting You mean humanity in general has been set back or space exploration? Cuz privatization has allowed for some incredible leaps in space exploration thus far with NASA fully embracing and eager for it.
@SocialistMormon@borgposting And while we don’t often get to the specific topic of safety culture/risk of accidents, all NASA peps I’ve worked with conveyed respect and been impressed by SpaceX (good words and approval of space commercialization in general as well)
