Mass uprisings are among the biggest threats to autocrats today, but cabinet cooptation helps mitigate them.

Opposition inclusion into cabinet ≠ democratization—autocrats use it to stabilize their rule.

The results show that regimes incorporating opposition groups into the cabinet are less likely to experience mass uprisings, especially when multiple elites from different societal groups are appointed to valuable cabinet positions.
