To all my friends in the international media, fellow Nepalis, and especially the families waiting anxiously for their loved ones—and those who have already lost someone they love:
Given Nepal’s difficult geography, tunnel rescue and recovery is an exceptionally specialized and dangerous task. From my understanding and the information I have received, very few forces in the world have the practical experience and expertise required to assess and access tunnels under conditions like these. The Nepal Army has that experience.
Look at the tunnels across Trishuli, Chilime and Langtang. Many have reportedly been affected deep into the tunnel, with mud, debris, sludge, silt, water and massive rocks blocking and filling the passages.
In some locations, the force of water and debris may have pushed or thrown workers anywhere from 20 metres to as far as 200 metres. Others may be completely buried beneath layers of mud, debris, sludge, silt and rock. The passages themselves may be unstable, flooded or completely blocked.
This is not simply a matter of entering a tunnel. It is a highly dangerous search-and-rescue operation requiring specialized knowledge of Himalayan terrain, underground structures, hydrology, unstable ground and tunnel access.
To the families who are still waiting: please do not lose hope. And to those who have already lost their loved ones, my deepest solidarity and respect.
To our international news friends and to everyone watching Nepal: please understand the extraordinary difficulty of this operation before judging the speed or method of the rescue.
If there is one institution I would trust to lead and carry out this operation in Nepal’s terrain, it is the Nepal Army.
Let them do what they know best—and let us stand behind them. @NepaliArmyHQ@ShahBalen
@globaltimesnews This is pathetic really. Here we are struggling to know the where abouts of the missing family members who were at Gyirong port immigration centre. You guys are keeping a toy and making propaganda pictures and videos 😢😢😢
