$ASTS In 2012 and 2013, MNOs were building out macro site towers for 4G/LTE with 50-150mbps peak backhaul, with some allowing for up to 300mbps to the site.
The ramifications of AST SpaceMobile being able to deliver close to 200mbps peak speeds to a cell site are massive. Not just for US rural and remote regions. Two other huge impacts:
1- Think about the impact to network resiliency. AST SpaceMobile will be able to serve as a global backup network when MNO towers and regions have outages.
2- Many developing countries are rural with minimal connectivity, certainly not rising to the level of mobile connectivity equivalent to US nationwide coverage in 2012-2014. Local MNOs will be able to extend coverage across their entire country without adding additional infrastructure by leveraging AST SpaceMobile instead.

Seems most likely Amazon is not going to be competing with $ASTS for MNO partners without applying for IMT frequencies or at worst will only be able to provide narrowband services.

“AST will provide Direct-to-Device coverage in the US in partnership with these mobile operators.”
$ASTS: Interesting aspect about the AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile Joint Venture. The structure should enable T-Mobile to leverage AT&T's and Verizon's existing definitive commercial agreements with AST SpaceMobile. In exchange for equity and access, T-Mobile will invest cash and certain IP, and contribute to certain spectrum licenses. When the JV goes definitive, if you see T-Mobile contributing any 600-900MHz lowband spectrum you'll know exactly why.

There are nearly 400m mobile subscribers between T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T. If you assume T-Mobile going to $ASTS (a when, not if, in my opinion) and 100% adoption for the reasons Dr. Mike lays out below, the numbers are pretty staggering.
For example, apply a conservative $5 per month ARPU with a 50/50 revenue split (ie, $2.50 ARPU per month for AST), you get $1b of subscriber based revenue per month. Multiple that revenue over 12 months, and you get to $12b of yearly revenue from the US market alone.
This does not include international markets, first responder networks, or defense.

We have now reached the point where the evidence that D2D adoption will be 100% of mobile devices is irrefutable if you have a modicum of ability to skate to where the puck is heading. I've got a few tweets below to show the broad, multi organization support for this claim. The only outstanding question is ARPU to $ASTS. I believe this will be in the 5-10 range (global blended) ultimately due to the service provided (first responder premium w/ priority/preemption, disaster resilience, demand map of devices to direct rural Capex, savings in rural tower Capex, copper and carrier of last resort sunsetting, grey zone coverage etc).

This is huge and the consequences of this can’t be overstated. ATT CEO says that there are some rural towers that can be replaced by NTN.
To be confident enough it to say this, the NTN replacement must be able to do all of the permutations of TN to NTN and NTN to TN handoffs. The solution must be baked in to the network core, and provide the same service quality.
I have a thread looking at some of the inevitability’s of the end state of the ASTS network. A little has changed, since I first posted this, the largest being that $ASTS confirmed to Ofcom that they can do 1:1 spectrum reuse. This means total available spectrum doesn’t have to be split in a color reuse pattern because of how sharp the rolloff is from the beams. This leads to even greater efficient due to larger blocks of spectrum in each beam.
There is a bloomberg article that i would suggest you read as part of the thread. It takes about the carrying costs associtaed with copper landlines, which will also be sunset due to a combination of FSS/D2D.

I'm excited to see what I wake up to tomorrow. Will $TMUS announce a deal with $ASTS? The market certainly does not think so. But we have the end of SpaceX exclusivity, we have the MNO JV, we have Grain Management spectrum approval. A lot of variables lined up. Isn't this a great time for $TMUS to show the market it's plan to avoid disintermediation by SpaceX?
