2 brothers, 1 dream...
In 2020 we were:
> Burnt out
> Unsatisfied at FTSE100 jobs
> Doing cheap side gigs on Upwork
In 2024 we:
> Are location Independent
> Have a #dreamteam of 8 winners
> Run Titan Marketing agency (6 fig agency)
Change is possible.
Here's our story ๐
1. Growing up abroad
Born in Bristol... @JPC_Titan & I moved to Greece when I was 8, and Kuala Lumpur at 10.
We were real 'Third Culture Kids'.
Family trips to places like Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Indonesia at a young age...
Plus the fact our friends came from a HUGE mix of countries, really opened our eyes.
2. Uni & the first tastes of entrepreneurship
After graduating school in 2016, I headed to the University of Exeter to study International Relations.
Jake joined me for his Undergrad 3 years later, when I'd started a (panic) Masters in Entrepreneurship & Innovation.
This was the best year of my education.
As a teen I had thousands of business ideas in my 'Notes' folder, devoured Guy Raz's How I Built This pod, & pitched weekly to my Dad (a very smart businessman & key advisor for us to this day).
We met amazing entrepreneurs like Jack Romero (who sold his airline to British Airways) & Ed Bird (from Bird Glasses)...
I started my first business called Hรผlah! (we sold conversation cards) that failed but I learnt a TONNE - we got into a local cafe, sold on Etsy, built a website & got Uni funding (who in their right mind approved that ๐)...
And then came the world of work...
3. FTSE 100 jobs & the 'seeds' of escape
With no business up & running, I looked for jobs.
My plan? Get some experience and build furiously on the side.
I applied to the Vodafone Graduate Scheme.
10,000+ registered and around 80 were accepted. We went through a video interview, assessment centre & more.
In my 3 years on the Grad Scheme I met some amazing people. Had some wonderful bosses.
And was given a LOT of responsibility at a young age - I was an Internet of Things Product Owner helping to operationalise the UK's strategy (e.g. Smart Devices, Tracking Kits, Autonomous Vehicles)... Really cool area.
But ultimately I just felt not... Me. I have no interest in corporate politics & ultimately wanted to BUILD.
So I worked on the side:
- Copywriting (made first $ on Upwork)
- Amazon FBA (invested $1000s to break even)
- Mini-ventures (a bucket hat business, a clothing line)
Around the same time, Jake reached a similar mindset after 1 year at L'Oreal, whilst working on marketing in the Ambre Solaire suncream department.
So we decided to go all in on something... Together.
Nothing clicked... Until...
4. Finding Klaviyo & First $$
We stumbled across @ecomchasedimond on Twitter.
Devoured his courses and learnt the basics of Email Marketing.
Titan was born.
In those early days it was tough. We did:
- $300-500 flow setups on Upwork
- Jobs not directly related to our niche
- EVERYTHING in house (copy, designs, Klaviyo setups)
We clocked 12+ hour days alongside our day jobs.
However, I'm a BIG believer in one thing... EVERYTHING you need to know is out there (if you pay for it).
So I reached out to @ecomivan & he taught us the basics of going from FREELANCER to AGENCY.
For the first year we made around ยฃ20-30k in revenue. Not enough to quit our FTSE 100 jobs, but we didn't care.
It was a start.
5. Complete & utter burnout
About a year later we landed our first significant retainer.
We grew quickly to about $13k/month, adding a couple more clients.
And then it came crashing down.
We had the barebones of a company. An Asana board, a logo & name... With no real supporting systems:
- Limited SOPs
- Unclear packages
- Sub-par employees
The systems couldn't support the growth.
And ultimately, with Jake still at University it was too much for both of us to handle.
We made the decision to release all clients except one.
Jake stepped back for a few months.
I took a 2 month travelling break in Vietnam to recoup (I was utterly drained).
Then, when Jake finished University...
6. The rebuild & scaling back to 6 figures
We regrouped in Spain.
Got out a whiteboard & took all the learnings from the last few months.
And REVERSE ENGINEERED Titan.
We hired an Account Manager from a top agency to consult with us - how do the BEST do things?
We started 'operation rebuild' & in 2 months we had our next client.
From there we've scaled smoothly. We:
- Built out our SOPs (Notion)
- Established better hiring processes (now we have a team of 8)
- Quickly became a Klaviyo Silver Partner
- Overhauled our packages
- Built out an EPIC SMS offering
- Accelerated sales via Cold Email, referrals & Upwork
- Launched NPS with client satisfaction above 9.8
... All thanks to that burn down.
Because sometimes you've got to let things fall apart.
So you can put them back together again.
--- CLOSING COMMENTS ---
We've since generated $20M in revenue for clients.
We've worked with amazing brands (like Camille Beckman, Riff Raff, Circular) & equally amazing employees.
I LOVE what we do & I'm so grateful the journey wasn't an easy one.
Because when I look back on the burnout, uncertainty & the multiple 'false starts' I had...
I see they were all preparing us for today.
So if I could say one thing to that 21 year old Billy... Still eagerly searching for an idea to escape the corporate monotony, but so uncertain... It would be 2 words:
'Keep going'.

Being unapologetically you (without fear) isn't just a route to peace, but it's good business.
Your unique bag of quirks, failures, strengths, anecdotes, lessons...
Are the most uncrossable moat you possess.
This home decor brand tripled their Klaviyo revenue in 1 month.
Usually wait 4-6 months to turn these into case studies...
But this was too good not to share ย ๐
The ticket to quick growth periods starts with the value add provided in Sales & smooth handover to Ops.
Clients are sometimes skeptical of agencies & being swindled by smooth-talking salesmen...
We're well aware of this & ensure they're comfortable and clear upfront:
โณ Audits (Deliverability, Automations, Campaigns) โ
โณ Flow Strategies (Miro customer lifecycles) โ
โณ Setup Timescales (Gantt charts) โ
The needle-movers are identified upfront.
The team builds on this during onboarding (weeks 1-2).
So we're NEVER chasing our tails.
And can move quickly, with clarity, & focus.
Here's to a similarly successful August ๐ฅ

4 steps to a high-performing launch ๐
1. ๐จ๐ฟ๐ด๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ ๐ขโ๐จ: "Limited quantities available!", "While Stocks Last". New launches are limited & high demand, get it before it runs out (especially if it's a bestseller reformulation OR widely requested product).
2. ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ณ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ก๐ข๐ง ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฃ: Why is this something they can't miss? How does the product solve their (deepest) needs specifically? Call it out & accentuate with design.
3. ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฌ: who else has benefited from THIS product (if reformulation) or similar products (if new launch)? Build trust - people buy people. Include a face & select reviews that highlight product benefits.
4. (๐๐ข๐ก๐จ๐ฆ) ๐๐ถ๐ณ๐ ๐ช๐ถ๐๐ต ๐ฃ๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐: if there's an offer put it front & centre. Make a purchase a no-brainer. Good tactic to convert non-buyers on your list.
Closing thoughts ๐
New launches widely contribute 25%+ of DTC revenue (McKinsey).
They're essential to stay top of mind & continue innovating your product set to meet the needs of your customer base.
With email we can build buzz, educate on the new products & maximise uptake on launch day.

We're not in the attention economy....
We're in the CONNECTION economy.
People (STILL) buy people.
In fact they buy them more in 2024 than EVER before.
For the last 2-3 years the entire Titan acquisition system relied on:
โณ Upwork
โณ Referrals
โณ Cold Email
But in 2024 unless you have a personal brand & mechanism to build HUMAN connection...
In 3-5 years you'll be irrelevant.
Like Vinyl, polaroids, retro, table top games... Things come full circle.
We're moving back from QUANTITY to QUALITY in all areas of life.
People will become more selective about who they trust, why they trust them, the content they consume.
Making inbound (and connection) the new currency:
โณ Blog Posts
โณ Social Media Profiles
โณ Video Content & Breakdowns
Which is why 3 weeks ago I launched the Titan Blog Machine.
Since then:
โณ 164 unique visitors (tiny but a start)
โณ Google the top source (people are finding us)
โณ Biggest page visits apart from 'Home' is our Klaviyo vs Mailchimp breakdown
Baby steps but I'm proud.
Outbound will continue to be a channel for Titan.
But it's time to start building in public.
At the end of the day people are on the other end of those laptops.
Late to the game but who cares?
Our client churn is low because we're genuine, authentic & passionate humans. It's time for that to come across online.

AI won't replace humans... BUT...
Humans (& brands) with AI with replace those without AI.
These were the transformative words I heard from Andrew Bialecki, the Klaviyo CEO at Klaviyo:LDN in April.
It's why I'm so bullish on Klaviyo over the long term.
Data really is the new oil. And they know it.
Helping brands understand customers, and get data they can actually interpret.
Klaviyo's data science team (140+ people) are the forefront of:
โณ Generative AI: content, segments, flows.
โณ NLP: SMS AI to reply to texts in a personalised way.
โณ Machine Learning: predictive analytics & tests 'at scale'.
It's why email marketing isn't commoditised... IF you invest & build a USP around in Klaviyo's rapidly expanding AI feature set.
The agencies & brands that DON'T will soon be made redundant.

1. Segmentation (positive engagement):

๐ Purchase Segments
๐ Exclusion segments (in welcome series, max 3x/week)
๐ Starting with 15 day engaged & expanding outwards (opens above 33%)
2. Double Opt In

3. Technical setup
๐ Dedicated IP
๐ Consistent Sending Domain
๐ MX Records check (DKIM invalid)
4. List Cleaning
๐ Unengaged
๐ Soft Bounce (4x)
5. On-Email Optimisation
๐ Optimise for mobile & desktop
๐ Balance text & images (60:40)
๐ Avoid 'spammy' words that trigger spam filers
6. Testing Software & ESP
๐ Use GlockApps to test deliverability
๐ Monitor by ESP (Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail) & segment out spikes for plain text
7. A/B Test (boost metrics)
๐ A/B test CTAs, design & copy for clicks
๐ A/B test send time, subject & preview for opens

What's your #1 tip for deliverability that I've not included above? Let me know in the comments ๐
Is it possible to get a lot done without exhausting yourself?
I used to think not.
3 years ago, I was juggling:

โณ An Amazon business
โณ Mailer Bros (the early name for Titan - don't laugh ๐)
I worked 12+ hour days with endless to-do lists.
Crossing off tasks made me feel productive.

โณ Report outcomes to the client

โณ Toggle by Open, Click, Orders, Unsubs
โณ Splits by Email OR Email & SMS
โณ Upload File (result screenshot)
โณ Description of each test
โณ Status updates for test
โณ Ability to add 'owner'
โณ Start & End Date
โณ Learnings tab
Give it to your team.
Scale the 'dirty work' for your clients.
Just comment 'Split Test'.

PS. I've been hearing a lot of talk about Email & SMS agencies becoming 'commoditised'. If your work is just copy -> design -> schedule email... Perhaps. Every agency does that. But our value as marketers is in the micro-details & 'dirty work'. We build and run scaleable processes (like A/B testing) that save OPEX & give us data we take to every new client. It's years of DTC data you can't replicate in-house. Don't get disheartened.

What are your main guidelines for high converting email templates? I'd love to hear from you in the comments ๐
It's impossible to build a high performing fully remote business... You just can't create an accountable & strong culture.
Or so I used to think.
2 years ago I left my FTSE100 job & ran Titan full-time.
Since then we've:
โณ Hired 10+ remote employees ๐จโ๐ป
โณ Across 3 different continents ๐
โณ Generated over $40M for our clients ๐
Here's 3 things I've learnt about building remote orgs in 2024 ๐
Agencies must run like a well oiled machine.
Especially when you're co-ordinating across borders.
Define the 'steps' that go into delivery.
For us, we run in batches of 5 emails:
> Copy (2 days)
> Designs (2 days)
> Internal QA & Edits (2 days)
> Client Edits (2 days)
> Titan Edits (2 days)
> Klaviyo Build & QA (2 days)
Etc. Etc.
We train our employees in onboarding.
We put this in the Statement of Work.
We clarify it in the Kickoff Call.
This allows us to predictably churn out quality across timezones.
And manage expectations from Day 1.
We can't ask how employees are doing over coffee.
Or check in at their desks.
We need online & 'low friction' ways to collect feedback.
So we created a Pulse survey.
That gives quick insights into employee engagement.
To do this:
1. Head to Typeform
2. Create survey
3. Add following questions (scale 1-10):
> How satisfied are you with Titan as a place to work? - Tests overall engagement.
> I know what constitutes 'good performance' in my role - Tests clarity of role & goals,
> I have everything I need to perform to the best of my ability - Tests our systems & employee resources.
> I feel valued & recognised for doing good work - Tests positive recognition & motivation.
> How would you rate your work-life balance? - Tests working culture & personal stress.
4. Integrate with Slack (boosting submission rate as they can submit directly)
5. Send bi-monthly
We then analyse results.
And cover any worrying stats in employee 1-1s.
Accountability is the #1 issue with remote teams.
In offices you had the social pressure of seeing colleagues & managers daily.
In the remote world the physical distance adds complexity.
To get around this, we link our tech stack:
1. Integrate Asana with Flowsana
2. When 'task is overdue' send Slack message
3. Directly to the owner & Ops Lead
This adds a layer of management.
Ensuring nothing slips through the cracks.
๐๐น๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ ๐
Remote work is the new normal.
It brings the opportunity to hire diverse teas unconstrained by geography.
And allows our people to live life on their terms.
But as a business owner it's our job to ensure we have the right:
> Processes
> Feedback Mechanisms
> Accountability systems
To build a high-performing business in the digital age.
