We are a global team of infectious disease professionals who protect our communities from biohazards with our business and professional development services.
We're back on Twitter!
Follow us to hear the latest news about biosafety, learn about our training programs, and connect with dedicated and experienced infectious disease professionals.
Take it from the chief of the @WHO - the best pathogen defense is a great offense!
We at @Bio_Risk offer trainings in disease prevention and biosafety to help our clients stop infections before they can spread.
Today, @WHO launched the Preparedness and Resilience for Emerging Threats Initiative, or PRET, to take an integrated approach to pandemic planning, by focussing on groups of pathogens and the systems they affect.

"Higher ventilation rates and reduced particle levels will contribute to reduced health risks, including those related to airborne respiratory pathogens."

New study on classroom ventilation
—> “Every 1 L/s per person increase in ventilation rate decreased the annual absence rate by 5.59 days”

From 2020-22, the number of public health labs sequencing SARS-CoV-2 & emerging variants nearly tripled, from 23 to 68, thanks to support from CDC's Advanced Molecular Detection program (@CDC_AMD). Learn more #NCEZIDin2022:

Biosafety and infectious disease surveillance is ever more important, as human activity drives more "spillover" events of animal pathogens.

Just because it's "dry" doesn't mean that it's clean!
Flour, sugar, and other raw ingredients are food for us - which means they are also food for bacteria that make us sick.
SALMONELLA OUTBREAK: CDC is investigating Salmonella cases in 11 states linked to flour. Flour is a raw ingredient and can have germs in it. Bake or cook foods made with raw flour before eating them. For more tips and information about the outbreak: https://t.co/ED5nkw4w5e
We deep sequenced >2800 Covid-19 patients, including those with a breakthrough infection, to study minor variants.
We observe that:
1. VOCs tend to generate more minor variants.
2. Vaccination does not increase non-silent mutations.

Candida auris is a fungus that causes lethal infections in healthcare settings, typically among immune-compromised patients.
It is often multidrug-resistant and is very hardy in a hospital environment, making it difficult to eradicate once it has taken hold in a facility.
Candida auris is spreading rapidly in health care settings. This 2021 article explains the dangers of C. auris, and why it and other deadly fungi are spreading throughout the world. https://t.co/bkWq9NKMxq
When patients drink water contaminated by V. cholerae, the bacterium multiplies rapidly in the gut and releases toxins that cause severe diarrhea. Patients typically die from dehydration.
This disease, known as cholera, can be prevented by water and sewage sanitation practices.
Last year, a large group of infectious disease experts published their detailed findings on the early stages of the #COVID19 pandemic in @ScienceMagazine, one of the world's premier scientific journals.
A great summary thread of their research from one of the authors here:
Here we not only cover the papers I discussed in the thread below but also: WIV, WCDC, spillover, biosafety, virus isolation, virus discovery, reverse genetics, gain of function, the live animal trade, future pandemics, prevention, & why the origin of the pandemic matters.
It's been more than 3 years since @WHO declared #COVID19 a pandemic. The field of biosafety will never be the same.
Follow us to learn more about our trainings in biosafety, pathogen awareness, and disease prevention!
From the first reports of an unknown virus, to WHO's 30 Jan 2020 public health emergency declaration, to our 11 Mar 2020 characterisation of #COVID19 as a pandemic, WHO has been working, advising, warning, learning. #OnThisDay
