On this day 16 years ago, Laszlo Hanyecz made history buying pizza for 10,000 bitcoin. The transaction was officially the first purchase in the world using bitcoin.
Great news! We have secured a new merchant who has agreed to accept Bitcoin for the first time for our monthly meetup at @TheBitcoinBasin
Let’s show them our support and make sure to top up your Lightning wallet (the best place to do this is hands down @stacked_bitcoin , New Zealand’s Bitcoin-only platform).
See you at Caribe on Fire on 21 May at 17:30.

What do you say if someone says "But Bitcoin mining blockrewards won't be profitable soon and fees are not enough to sustain mining?"
Here's how I just responded
I completely get why you'd be concerned that fees are not enough to provide ancillary mining revenue as halvings but into block rewards. And you're right, this was a big concern a few years ago.
The reason it is no longer an issue for mining companies is because they have found a myriad of ancillary revenue sources including grid stabiliization (demand response, FCAS, 4CP, blackstart in particular), heat recycling, carbon credits, RECs. I was talking to a mining company 3 days ago that's now regularly earning 2/3 of their income through proactive grid stabilization. This is why I have no concerns about the long-term economic viability of mining.

Yet to find a single Bitcoiner who has not noticed this same effect.
One of the biggest environmental benefits of Bitcoin is how it reduces overconsumption.
Alright plebs!
Our next Monthly meetup at the @TheBitcoinBasin is happening in the heart of Queenstown, right by the lake.
This venue is giving Bitcoin a shot for the very first time, they’ll be accepting Bitcoin as payment exclusively for our event.
Now it’s up to us:
Let’s show them the incentives to become a permanent Bitcoin merchant.
If you’re in Queenstown (or know someone who is), spread the word, come along, and top up your Lightning wallet to spend some sats!
📍 Location: Momentos by the Lake
🕠 Time: 17:30
See you there! 🚀
"The West will be last to understand Bitcoin's utility, because the West is last to need it. That's an unusual position for people accustomed to being first"

#Bitcoin meetup in Wellington, next Wednesday April 1!
Get along Wellington plebs!
We're going to start growing this meetup, watch this space for some new developments in the coming months. Exciting times ahead for Wellington Bitcoiners!
Nell is heading to @BTCPrague this year, Laser eyed kiwi flag in hand to tell the world about New Zealand and what we have been up to in little old Queenstown!
In January 2009 @halfin was running Bitcoin...We are proud to announce that in 2026 we will be driving Bitcoin (literally) across New Zealand.
We’re launching Oceania’s first Bitcoineta, a mobile grassroots mission to bring Bitcoin education to every corner of the country.
We will drive to remote villages, dense cities, and forgotten roads with a single purpose: to share the tools of self-sovereignty, to explain what money is, and to reveal how Bitcoin restores individual freedom in an age of surveillance and control.
If you feel like contributing to this project, we have created a @geyserfund . Any support will allow us to travel further and help more people become sovereign, as we will be teaching the fundamental importance of self-custody and giving away sats so they can start their Bitcoin Journey.
To ensure this project remains sustainable, there will be sponsor opportunities for Bitcoin related projects that want their brand seen across New Zealand. Sponsorships will be considered carefully with priority given to open-source initiatives.
The Bitcoineta NZ
This project will be implemented by Bitcoin Journey but was inspired by @labitcoineta and @b4_humanity . It will be based in the @TheBitcoinBasin circular economy.
Special thanks:
@arielaguilar and @GabrielKurman for their support and know-how, and @Bitkiwi1 for being the best possible event at which we could have launched this exciting initiative.
It all starts with education. Let’s build a more sovereign Aotearoa together.
