Daily News Bites on Sustainability and Science. We do climate, ecology, energy, demography, geoengineering, greentech, bio-everything and just lots of science!
@lavergnetho @herrenloserHund ...and thanks for the encouragement :) It's a killer graph - sort of tells the entire story... (Although PLIOCENE comparisons also add an important piece of the puzzle about future sea level rise...)
Dear teachers & principals of the world,
Please encourage your students to participate in their #ClimateStrike on 9/20. This is a historic moment and there is literally nothing more important for them to do.
And please join them.
Sincerely,

Now what are the benefits for global #biodiversity of strengthening the UN climate target from 2C to 1.5 degrees? Again good question! And here's the answer: huge! Species habitat decline would decrease 2- to 3-fold!

What are the benefits for global sea levels of strengthening the UN climate target from 2C to 1.5 degrees? Good question! Here's the answer. The difference may be larger than you think: (prevented) tipping of major ice sheet tipping points. #sealevelrise https://t.co/pojiPSYaG1
How do greenhouse gases cause warming?
Part 2 in series of 'climate questions' on @NUnl, this one answered by me (in Dutch).
https://t.co/1pnUdCugm9
Just like a blanket keeps your body warm, greenhouse gases impede a planet's heat loss by absorbing part of the infrared radiation.
Klimaatvraag @NUnl:
Hoe komt het dat de temperatuur stijgt door broeikasgassen?

(disclaimer: het antwoord wordt gegeven door mij :-)
Net zo als een deken je warmer houdt, belemmeren broeikasgassen het warmteverlies van de aarde.

To help attract bees to your garden don’t mow your lawn too much. Letting it grow slightly longer allows small flowers & weeds to appear which attract bees + other insects. If you can, leave a wild patch of long grass in the garden for wildflowers to grow. Avoiding being too tidy
“We live in a strange world, where children must sacrifice their education in order to protest against the destruction of their future.”

Very few people in the Netherlands are coming to grips with the fact that our country might very well have an expiry date. Read the alarming messages from the Dutch scientists speaking out in this article.

Internationally the Netherlands is listed as a hotspot of sea level rise impacts. We Dutch tend to think otherwise. That could well be overconfidence. Or in more scientific terms: there are limits to adaptation. Beyond those limits…https://t.co/0V6QSdL3iC https://t.co/C5WGO5pbGn
Dear @DanielBoffey, dear @guardian: there were THIRTY THOUSAND (30,000!) Dutch school children on #climatestrike today in The Hague. Could you please report & rectify ('why don't the Dutch')? It's actually HUGE HERE TOO (thanks to Greta, the Belgians & everyone else...)
