Founders of onchain neobanks and crypto card projects, it's completely normal to:
- Be a small project
- Charge fees if they're transparent
- Not offer cashback if the economics don't work
- Not be #1 in every metric
- Build for a specific audience, not everyone
- Have 1,000 real users instead of 100,000 followers
- Reply to users on X even if they don't have a checkmark
- Have founders talk directly to users
- Admit when something doesn't work
- Say "we don't support this yet"
- Have a simple product with just a few features
- Focus on one product instead of launching five
- Grow slowly
- Not offer a physical card
- Build a boring product if it just works well
- Not have a huge marketing budget
- Have fewer features, but make sure they work reliably
- Have quiet weeks without big announcements
- Ship small updates
- Change the roadmap if something isn't working
- Use good ideas from competitors instead of trying to reinvent everything
- Admit that competitors do some things better than you
- Ask users what they actually want
- Get negative feedback in the comments
- Respond to criticism publicly
- Make mistakes
- Have technical issues sometimes
- Have lower volumes during a bear market
- See your token drop during a bear market
- Not have a token at all
- Cut unsustainable cashback or rewards
- Choose sustainability over impressive numbers
- Say no to features your users don't need
- Build for existing users instead of constantly chasing new ones
- Not be the biggest project in your category
You don't need to look bigger than you are
What's not normal:
- Users complaining about bad support in your social media comments
- Users asking the same questions over and over while projects keep ignoring them. Third-party IBAN deposits are the most common question I get in my comments
- Marketing says one thing, the docs say another, and the app shows something else
- Saying "0% fees" when there's still a spread/markup somewhere
- Making the terms so complicated that users need a separate guide just to understand the actual fees or cashback
- Not explaining who holds users' funds
- Not explaining which features are available in which countries
- Support not knowing the answers to basic questions about its own product
Just build a product people actually want to use
