When I was growing up in Charleston, SC, as a young Air Force pilot, I lived downtown and walked to the Market frequently to drink beers and chat up College of Charleston girls.

These were the same years that Darius and Hootie & The Blowfish were just starting out. They played in bars for a minimal cover, and I’d walked over to listen.

Cuban Missile crisis? Uh no most of us didn’t worry about it. I only talked about it in history class because it was over in 1962! However I did worry in the 80’s about getting that swatch watch I wanted that was sold out. Gimme a break. The 80’s were awesome. The 80’s like any decade had some challenges but we just came outa the Vietnam war era and it was like a total relief. From Reagan to the fall of Soviet Union, to some of the best classic movies and songs. Nobody getting cancelled for saying dumb stuff. Nobody dropping f bombs as loud as they could at the mall food court because most people at least still knew how to act in public. I was 17 Feb 17 1980. Some of the greatest memories of my life. It was like living in a John Hughes movie before I ever knew who he was. I don’t know what Canada was like for this guy in the 80’s but for most of us that grew up in the states in the 80’s it was pretty awesome and if I had a chance and was granted 1 week to go back in time I’d head straight to 1985 even though I was dead broke. I’m sure x will have the normal people bitching and moaning about this post because they live in a constant state of anger but just like in the 80’s I could care less about or have time for idiots that hate everything . The 80’s rocked. Now excuse me while I pop on some Night Ranger and a little Huey topped with some classic Strait. Let’s Git-r-done!

On September 11, half a million people were taken off Manhattan by boat.

It took nine hours.

Everyone remembers the footage of people walking north across the Brooklyn Bridge. Almost nobody talks about the people south of the towers, who could not walk north, because north was where the towers had just come down.

Bridges closed. Tunnels closed. Subways stopped. Hundreds of thousands of people were standing at the edge of an island inside a cloud of concrete dust with nowhere left to go on foot.

A Coast Guard lieutenant named Michael Day got on the radio and called for every boat in the harbor. Any vessel willing to help evacuate Lower Manhattan, report in.

The harbor turned around and came at Manhattan.

Ferries. Tugboats. Dinner cruise boats. Fire boats. Private yachts. Sandy Hook pilot boats. Roughly 150 vessels and about 800 mariners, most of them civilians who happened to own a boat with a working engine.

At points the dust was so thick they were docking by radar because they could not see the seawall they were pulling against.

One captain was offered four thousand dollars by a man who wanted to be run across alone. He turned it down and kept loading people.

Another captain wrote down the name of a passenger afterward. Harold. He had been shaking badly when they pulled him aboard. Once he understood he was safe and headed for New Jersey, he asked to ride back with them and help.

The final count was over 500,000.

Dunkirk moved 338,226 men, and Dunkirk took days.

There was no plan for this. Nobody was in charge of it. One man with a radio asked, and a harbor full of strangers pointed their boats at the smoke.

Many of those mariners have cancer and lung disease now from the air they were breathing that day.

It is the largest water evacuation in human history.
It was finished before dinner. 🇺🇸
