I have spent the end of this week conducting an arbitration in Harare which took me to the north of Harare again - Highlands, Borrowdale etc.

It was a stark reminder that Zimbabwe has become a tale of two economies. The first economy is that of Harare north where all the major roads (not just the arterial roads but the cross roads as well) are in tip top condition and the profusion of mind boggling mansions and Rolls Royce motor vehicles is staggering. It is the economy of Toyota Landcruisers being gifted with tens of thousands of US$ cash “spending money”. It is the economy of musicians being paid a million dollars to sing at a birthday party. It is the economy of young connected women in their 20s owning properties worth millions of dollars from unexplained sources of wealth. It is the economy of connected people being paid millions of dollars of taxpayers money for contracts which remain unfulfilled.

Then there is the other economy. It is the economy of hundreds of thousands of children out of school. It is the economy of government schools literally collapsing before our very eyes. It is the economy of hospitals without basic medications. It is the economy of 97 poor Zimbabweans dying on a ferry which needed repairs costing the equivalent of one Toyota Fortuna to become seaworthy. It is the economy of those 97 families being paid $100 each as compensation for their irreparable loss. It is the economy of major roads collapsing totally , allegedly being rehabilitated by the very same people who are building mansions in Harare north and driving on their pristine roads in Rolls Royces.

Something is very seriously wrong with our body politic.

This woman experienced a medical emergency while travelling with her 5-year-old son in Harare CBD. She quickly stopped and parked her car so she could administer emergency oxygen to him.

Shortly after parking, her car was clamped. She says she tried to explain that she had only stopped because her son urgently needed medical attention, but no one was willing to listen. To make matters worse, she did not have any money with her to pay for the parking or the fine needed to have the clamp removed.
