This work reconciles controversial experimental findings in the literature for context-dependent choice. More broadly, it highlights how different sources of noise can interact with neural computations to modulate behavior differentially.
Therefore, when considering the impact of decision context on choice, it improves choice accuracy under early noise but impairs choice under late noise.
We take a perspective that human choice errors are contributed by two types of noise: early noise reflecting the uncertainty of value inputs, and late noise reflecting the inherent stochasticity of the neural process. The two types of noise lead to opposite behavioral effects.
