There is this notion that people can’t handle the ontological shock of alien disclosure. The question is: which people? I think it’s governments that are worried more than the general public. Suddenly they won’t be the all-powerful alpha species on Earth. The public is used to being controlled by the government and powerful corporations, but the alpha organizations have more to lose.
