Today, @POTUS will sign my Emmett Till #AntilynchingAct into law.
For the first time in U.S. history, we are finally make lynching a FEDERAL hate crime. And we are doing it in Emmett Till’s name.
It’s time to right this historic injustice.
It's been a pleasure to serve alongside Rep. Rush in Congress and as a member of the Illinois congressional delegation. I know that whatever challenge he tackles in his next chapter, it will be just as impactful as the work he did for his district. https://t.co/V5SZ6jJ4EC
NEWS: the House passed the Martha Wright-Reed Just and Reasonable Communications Act, limiting correctional facility phone call costs so incarcerated Americans can stay connected to their support system – a well-documented way to lower recidivism rates. https://t.co/qht5M27Fqq
BREAKING! In the final hrs of the 117th Congress, lawmakers just passed legislation restoring the FCC's regulatory authority over ALL prison & jail phone & video calls! This will lower rates across the country. Big thanks to @SenDuckworth @RepBobbyRush for championing this bill!
The bill is named after #MarthaWrightReed, a woman who became an activist on the issue after she was forced to choose between paying for her medication & talking to her incarcerated grandson over the phone, due to the exorbitant prison phone charges.
I am thrilled that the House & Senate passed S. 1541, the Senate version of my bill to ban charging families exorbitant costs to call incarcerated loved ones. This is inhumane & immoral, which is why I have been working with advocates for years to stop it.
This practice serves only to fatten profits & harm families, and once @POTUS signs the bill, we will put a stop to it. Thank you to @SenDuckworth for partnering with me on this vital issue, & for working to get this bill across the finish line.
Chain grocery stores may leave underserved neighborhoods, but we can survive without them. Decreasing our dependence on corporate benevolence can increase our self-reliance if we invest in community food co-ops.
The opportunity is here.

@RepBobbyRush is leaving Congress after 29 years. But, the former Black Panther told me, he’s not really retiring. He’s “returning” home, to his church &community, and to his first love: social justice & community organizing. More in my latest for @thehill https://t.co/x28nCnllW0
Wishing the Jewish community in IL’s First District & across the country a #HappyHanukkah. I hope your celebrations are filled with joy, peace & happiness.
Chairmen @FrankPallone & @RepBobbyRush join other House leaders in sharing a new GAO report today, which found federal agencies need more resources to improve energy efficiency in federal buildings and effectively help combat the #ClimateCrisis. Read on👇

Wednesday, @darrenebryant & I hosted a roundtable regarding the failing water infrastructure in the South Suburbs attended by Southland mayors & officials from the @EPA & IEPA. Federal & State resources are needed to provide these communities w/ a reliable supply of clean water.

As he ends a historic and accomplished career in Congress, the CAR Coalition thanks @RepBobbyRush for his leadership on right to repair issues and his sponsorship of the REPAIR Act. Thank you, Congressman, for your efforts!
Today I joined @USDOT, @RepBobbyRush, @chicagosmayor, & other community leaders to celebrate the $20M in federal RAISE grant funding for the Englewood Nature Trail. This fed investment in a historically underserved area will serve as a backbone for recreation in the community.
Today, we honor the legendary trailblazer, #RosaParks for her bravery to spark a movement that changed America for the better. Her leadership has inspired me and so many Americans – and countless others around the world – all these years later.
As a former railroad worker myself, I am deeply concerned for railroad employees. That’s why I voted for both of @SpeakerPelosi’s bills that would keep the country’s rail lines running & grant workers the personal time off they deserve.
I urge the Senate to pass both bills.
(1/2) I am saddened by the death of my friend, colleague, & fellow Energy & Commerce Committee member, Representative Donald McEachin. We shared a passion for promoting racial & gender equality, as well as environmental justice.
