Syrskyi is out. Drapatyi is in. The General Staff faces an overhaul.

Tonight you will hear that Zelensky ‘caved.’ That the street now runs the war. That changing commanders mid-war is chaos.

I see the opposite — and I wrote it this morning: a leader who can be argued back into the right position by his own citizens is not weak. He is governed.

But don’t miss the deeper event. This was never about two men. It was a referendum on military doctrine — the Soviet inheritance of centralized command versus the war Ukraine actually proved it could win: software, iteration, initiative at the edge.

The old doctrine just lost its chief defender.

And look at who won. Drapatyi is the general who once offered his resignation because a Russian strike killed his recruits — he claimed responsibility for deaths he did not cause. In Moscow, generals collect medals for deaths they did cause.

That is the difference between the two armies. Tonight it became the difference between the two futures.

Fedorov’s return is still unresolved. The doctrine question no longer is.

Together with Mykhailo, Yevhenii Khmara, and Pavlo Palisa, we determined how the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine should be reconfigured. It is a fact that Oleksandr Syrskyi delivered results for Ukraine in the defense of Kyiv, the Kharkiv offensive, and the Kursk operation. We have come a long way, Ukraine's defense continues, and every warrior must be treated with dignity. I am grateful to Oleksandr Syrskyi and to every one of our warriors for Ukraine's strong positions on the front. I am grateful to Mykhailo Drapatyi for sharing this vision. For everyone trying to understand who Ukraine's new Commander-in-Chief is, here's some background:

Mykhailo Drapatyi is a 42-year-old Ukrainian major general who has spent more than a decade fighting Russia and is widely regarded as one of Ukraine's most respected battlefield commanders. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has now appointed him as the country's new Commander-in-Chief, replacing General Oleksandr Syrskyi.

What sets Drapatyi apart is his approach to warfare. He is considered one of the strongest advocates inside the Ukrainian military for modern, technology-driven combat. He has pushed for the widespread use of drones, electronic warfare, intelligence integration, and decentralized command, arguing that initiative at the junior-officer level wins battles more effectively than rigid Soviet-style hierarchies.

He is also known as one of the military leaders closest to Mykhailo Fedorov, the two have been associated with efforts to rapidly expand the use of battlefield technology, drone capabilities, digital systems, and innovation across the Armed Forces. Their shared emphasis on technology and adaptation has made Drapatyi a favorite among many of Ukraine's younger officers and military reformers.

As Commander of the Ground Forces, Drapatyi launched reforms aimed at improving combat training, modernizing recruitment, reducing corruption, strengthening junior leadership, and ensuring soldiers received training that reflected the realities of the modern battlefield rather than outdated doctrine.

Another defining characteristic is his emphasis on accountability. Following a deadly Russian strike on a Ukrainian training center in 2025, Drapatyi resigned as Ground Forces commander, stating that commanders not soldiers must bear responsibility for failures.
