Orthopedic surgeons know the medicine they need to know in the context of their specialty. Anything outside that is a consult, which is exactly how every specialty works.
Internal medicine, family medicine, psychiatry, radiology, anesthesia, surgery, OB/GYN, derm, EM, ophtho, urology, plastics, pediatrics, all of them have their own knowledge base and consult when something falls outside their lane.
That’s not “little medical knowledge.” That’s specialization. This is how the entire medical system works and the entire point of having different specialties, we all train and become experts in our respective fields.
