@danteshepherd@NU_ChemE To add to this, we are using graphene oxide coated PES which permits long term high temperature and pH variability. This allows us to operate with higher total dissolved solids and treat waste from more brewing processes. Reverse osmosis fails at high TDS.
@danteshepherd@NU_ChemE Hi Professor Landherr! Many breweries are using a pre-filtration step to separate out solids and follow it up with RO to purify the water. We are similar in that regard, but rather than providing animal feed, we are recovering energy from the spent grain.
@PharaohFluids@NU_ChemE Thanks for your suggestions! It may be tough to see, but there is an in-line relief valve after the PD pump. We are toying with the idea of having it flow back to the pump feed if it exceeds pressure to avoid spillage. There are also in-line relief valves after each evaporator.
@ProfVigeant@NU_ChemE (2/2) should be sufficient to clear normal fouling. We have also accounted for a conservative replacement schedule every 6 months. Industrial applications in pulp and paper show these membranes last for well over a year.
@ProfVigeant@NU_ChemE (1/2) We have introduced a high flowrate, high-pressure (1000psi) recirculation stream to both membranes that artificially increases the flowrate on the membranes. While we do not have physical access to massive PD pumps, the turbulent flow induced by these streams...
@PyroCycleNEU@NU_ChemE We do plan to further test acidity to maintain a neutral pH, however, the samples we obtained from Lamplighter were at a 6.8 pH already which didn’t warrant any neutralization. Also, we will not perform any VFA analysis as there is no digestion process within our system.
@MilkyWayChemE@NU_ChemE We have considered the longevity of these membranes and have accounted for replacement two times per year in our cost analysis because of the high flow rates in the system.
@WillitsLab@NU_ChemE The cost of recycling the water is the cost of the initial membrane skids and the electricity to pump the water through them. The quality of water that can be attained is equivalent to tap water.

My current understanding is that most regions don't currently offer recycling for Styrofoam and there is not currently a lot of infrastructure to sort it out of waste streams. How are you planning on obtaining your feed? Is this going to be a barrier to operation?
