Conversations about AI. Professor Benjamin Becker, with some help from #AI, can do something that sounds like science fiction: tell, from a #brain scan, the emotion that the person was feeling. The advances in AI have helped Prof Becker improve our understanding of the brain pathways responsible for emotions such as fear, disgust and #anxiety. This knowledge is incredibly important: it can help doctors better treat people whose brains mis-regulate these emotions, leading to mental health problems such as #depression, #addiction and anxiety. But, says Professor Becker, even though AI can revolutionize the diagnostics and treatment of psychological disorders, it may not be able to replace psychologists.

Who is the best person to talk to about #AI – a computer scientist, a psychologist or a philosopher? Learning about AI is important, because it is now everywhere. Using AI, scientists make breakthroughs once considered impossible. AI is changing how we create art, socialise, study. AI skills are becoming a must-have on a CV. The University of Hong Kong is at the forefront of the AI revolution. Our science editor interviewed HKU’s researchers and educators who work with AI in a wide range of disciplines - from philosophy and filmmaking to mathematics and computer science. To learn more about what AI is, what it can do, and what we can do using AI, follow this new series: Conversations about AI.

To adjust quickly to daylight savings, get up at your usual (clock) time & get 10-45min of exercise, ideally outside & facing the sun (if it’s out/rising/even if cloudy). The combined effects of bright light and exercise have a synergistic effect on circadian clock shifts.
Are fear and anxiety the same thing? This is a century-old question. Using #AI#HKU@bn_becker and collaborators showed that experiences of #fear and #anxiety are different in the brain. This can change treatments for fear and anxiety disorders. More: https://t.co/s1Cra6sTzy
#HKU’s @bn_becker & collaborators mapped the expression of angiotensin II type1 receptor ATR1 in human #brain. Highest density was in #reward#motivation#stress#memory areas. Targeting ATR1 system opens door for new treatments of mental disorders. https://t.co/lHAB7y1N14
Get your sleep & daytime energy and mood right: Get sunlight in your eyes as early in your day as possible. Especially on cloudy days. Extra time outside if you wake up late. Sunglasses off if you safely can. Eye glasses and contacts fine. Lights bright by day, sun-off at night.
