@tomgordonLD@VikkiSlade72 All while there is 15bn a year pension subsidy to higher-rate earners just sat there waiting to be removed. Equalise pension tax relief at basic rate!
Comments by @tomgordonLD & @VikkiSlade72 here are bizarre! Millennials start getting state pension in about 21 years! OBVIOUSLY reducing increases will hurt them (and me!) Who do they think the savings in 2050 onwards will come from? https://t.co/LBcr32YfyL
@tomgordonLD@VikkiSlade72 The younger you are the more the changes to triple lock hurt you! I think criticism of unpredictability of cost/benefit fair, and at some point you should stop raising it. But we should be clear about who this harms. Not pensioners!
@resfoundation But the problem is that it then fixes the state pension at a ludicrously low share of average earnings. The triple lock was a bad way to increase this, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be increased.
The media euphemism that Keir Starmer has ‘vacated his seat’ is an utter travesty. Almost as if he accidentally wafted away on a gust of wind.
Be honest. He u-turned on his promise to stay as an MP, deserted his constituents and his party - for what? To go and make money on the international circuit.
The only thing forensic about him is the chalk outline he has left behind instead of a meaningful legacy. A fitting epitaph to the worst PM in our movements history.
Believe me, it’s not personal in anyway. I wish him well.
But we cannot allow the media and others to sugarcoat just how bad his govt was, by the standards OUR movement expects.
We must have an honest analysis of it it. About the toxic culture it fostered, the behaviour it condoned. One that enabled a small clique to bring back Peter Mandelson into the heart of govt.
To expel thousands of members for no reason. To clamp down on the right to protest. To allow a genocide to unfold and do next to nothing about it.
If we don’t ask ourselves how this happened and why, if we don’t interrogate this sorry chapter - then we are doomed to repeat it.
So no, let’s not sugarcoat his legacy.
@Michael_J_Hil@PoliteRevo3255 4. The wider fiscal multiplier! Huge expansion of training/apprenticeships, good jobs, transferable skills, massive supply boost to economy.
5. The drag on the economy of high housing costs is also dealt with, as well as the incredible fiscal human costs beyond HB.
2/3 (sorry)
