When geology meets botany, definitely “size” is quite, quite important. TENERIFE, Canary Islands. Stunning TOWER OF JEWELS, Red Bugloss (Echium Wildpretii), local endemism. @GeoTenerife@TenerifeNature
In 2019, #Abutilon albidum plants were rediscovered on Tenerife. Until then, A. grandifolium - widely naturalised & #invasive on the Canary Islands - was the only species of Abutilon known from the island: https://t.co/aluyAuz8pS #Malvaceae#botany
A nauturalist abroad ..... so naturally, having a look at the local botany :)
Starting with Tenerife Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus campylocladus)
@BSBIbotany@botanycamp
This particular species relies on cross-pollination even though the flower has both female and male parts. The bracts’ sole purpose is to both protect the flower and attract pollinators. Even though bracts are leaves, they do not participate in #photosynthesis. @GeoIntern
At one particular point today, I had a great encounter with the beautiful #Bougainvillea - a vibrant and unusually structured #plant! Native to South America, this species typically thrives in subtropical/tropical environments. @GeoIntern#biodiversity#LaPalma
21/1/14 - On this day five years ago we walked the lower slopes of El Teide in #Tenerife, searching for the critically endangered #orchid Himantoglossum metlesicsianum, my favourite European species. It’s endemic to the #CanaryIslands, found only in Tenerife and #LasPalmas.
As the sun prepares to set on 2018, we are full of projects, hope and excitement for the New Year.
Happy 2019 to all of you from the beautiful Canary Islands!
@DoctorPreece@GeoTenerife Hi David - we have had a fair bit of interest from A’Level students for courses and we’re currently looking into feasibility for 2019, when our own field trip centre will be up and running.
