Why London needs a micro de-paving revolution 🧵

We need a scheme to de-pave & green small (less than 50 sq. metres) currently impermeable areas in London. This is illustrated by some of the *100’s* of such areas I saw on a 20 min cycle through one part of the city in LB Newham

@tonyddyer asked good questions about who is responsible for stopping such actions & said it is understandable that the public would have concerns about declaring an ecological emergency and then apparently undermining it.

What is going on at Yew Tree Farm should serve as a grave warning for anyone who thinks #biodiversityloss will be solved by #biodiversitynetgain legislation alone. Ecology needs to learn how to wield the new power it has been given; storytelling will be key. Species surveys also.

Catchment scale attenuation provides some hope for the future. But is complex, requiring joined up policy & funding.

Reducing flood peaks by slowing runoff with multiple interventions.

Before anyone asks wide-scale dredging would make things much worse (here at least).
