I feel like Datu's only real mistake in the Jaetu relationship BEFORE everything hit the fan was that he downplayed his feelings. He was clearly more hurt by everything going on but never truly spoke up about how he was being affected. Sure, he mentioned the avatar situation—

Datu: Out of character or is this actually who he is?

Something worth considering is that almost everything we knew about Datu before these four episodes was through Jae’s POV.

What if he simply behaves differently around Jae?

Interestingly, his most questionable moments happened when Jae WASN’T around: letting Kayoko kill someone and abandoning Ellora instead of helping mobilize people.

And that note he wrote about exposing the Council and Bending Brigade “by any means necessary, even force.” That’s quite telling.

Maybe there’s more to Datu than Jae knows

Datu didn’t get angry at Jae for reading his personal journal. Jae's cooking was bad? That means he STILL ate it. Jae was the person he confided his worries to even though Jae was dismissive of it and Datu still gave him the benefit of doubt until the end. This man was IN LOVE.
