@AmericanGwyn Interesting you have Robert Stone on your list. He was my dad's favorite, after Papa. Dad thought, I if I remember right, A Hall of Mirrors was his best. Dad also turned me on to The Painted Bird, when I was 12, and Blood Merdian (much later).
