To say I feel honored to be featured in a CNN article titled “Meet the Future of American Politics” is an understatement. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re too young or too inexperienced.
Let’s restore government to being “For the People, Not the Party.”

@Brett0897 has been a Capitol regular in recent years where he's successfully fought the state's proposed anti-drag bills alongside other local activists.
Catch our recent convo on the #WeThePeople blog to hear why he keeps showing up for South Dakota. https://t.co/DbS0ixelpf
Brett Ries is back https://t.co/73fCNnMcLE
We have to analyze whether the government is engaging in content or viewpoint discrimination here, which it's not allowed to do; this bill goes too far by adding drag performance; federal courts have ruled that's viewpoint discrimination
Mortenson says he resists the motion; he walked in expecting to support the motion; he says he was swayed by Ries since this language has been struck down in other states; Mortenson says there's a place for a drawing of a line when conduct can be so indecent; but there's ...
Brett Ries (who I've written about and who's researched how drag bans violate the First Amendment) says this bill targets speech that's protected under the First Amendment; he says this is impermissible content and viewpoint discrimination

In “Looking Backward to Move Forward: Ending the “History and Tradition” of Gun Violence Against the LGBTQ+ Community,” Brett Ries, @Brett0897, explains how gun-regulation review under Bruen ignores anti-LGBTQ+ gun violence. He proposes legislative reform. https://t.co/8J2r8E8He3
Thank you for sharing my recent accomplishment and TEDx talk, @argusleader!
I knew back in January legislators were going to attack drag. I decided to take an in-depth look at the legality of what they were trying to do.
Link to my research is in the article.
A recent graduate of Duke Law School with South Dakota ties just won a national award for his research on how drag bans violate the First Amendment. https://t.co/VkCugW893u
BREAKING: SD state representative upset people are exposed to reporting on what state legislators do in order to read reports on what city council members do.
In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, people wanting access to the published minutes of their city government meetings must pay for this leftist propaganda masquerading as “journalism.” That needs to change.
Instead of protecting ALL protected classes, the Court departs from its anti-discrimination + Free Speech precedent so individuals and businesses can discriminate more in the public market.
This case was an LGBTQ+ case, but EVERYONE should be worried about its implications.
NOBODY won in this decision.
Businesses can now discriminate against Christians, heterosexuals, and white people, as long as they disagree with the message providing them creative services would send. Anti-discrimination law no longer applies in this context, per the Court.
Kudos to Duke Law alum Brett Ries '23 (@Brett0897) for winning the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association’s (@LGBTQBar) Michael Greenberg Writing Competition for his student note “Don’t Be A Drag: How Drag Bans Can Violate the First Amendment” 🔗 https://t.co/V3Oeman8yx
Brett Ries ’23 (@Brett0897) is finalist in ACS's (@acslaw) Constance Baker Motley National Student Writing Competition for note on how to curb gun violence against LGBTQ+ people 🔗 https://t.co/LLXLKdeAmQ
In his Note, "Not Up for Deliberation: Expanding the Peña-Rodriguez Protection to Cover Jury Bias Against LGBTQ+ Individuals," Brett V. Ries explains how courts can constitutionally protect LGBTQ+ individuals from anti-LGBTQ+ jury bias.

Across the country, state legislatures have been discussing bills that could place limitations on drag shows. In recent months there have been at least eight states considering these types of bills, including Nebraska. https://t.co/NqAe8EMVgu
These are the same person, and they can both tell you why this would likely be unconstitutional.
Protect the First Amendment. We don't bother you when you go to pray. Don't bother us when we go to perform.
LEAVE. DRAG. ALONE.
Sen. Julie Frye-Mueller signaled Thursday she would propose an anti-drag show bill in the South Dakota Legislature this upcoming session. https://t.co/nSuRWlUTqx
Speaking of tips, here are some (from a drag queen and soon-to-be lawyer):
(1) Drag shows can be kid-friendly.
(2) Forbidding public universities from hosting or funding student-org drag shows would likely violate the First Amendment, so don't even try!
I’ve had a number of very upset people asking me about the “kid friendly” drag queen dance show taking place at SDSU. Yes, they are actually inviting children to come with $1 and $5 bills to tip the drag queen dancers. Here’s the correspondence I sent to the SDSU President:
Comey admitted he was wrong after he claimed I had classified emails.
Trump’s own State Department, under two different Secretaries, found I had no classified emails.
