@Susanna1994423 @nytimes Great question Susanna! Cannibalism can be an adaptive strategy (many fish do this too) when value of a nest is low. Parent re-coups energy from nest, to put toward future reproduction. Becomes maladaptive at a population level when ~half failing this way in impaired streams.
