The Navajo Nation has roughly 400,000 enrolled members and covers more land than West Virginia. Until this April, none of them had ever signed an NFL contract.

The one who finally did played six snaps on Saturday night and got a standing ovation from fans wearing both teams' jerseys.

Shiyazh Pete's first high school didn't have a football team. He transferred to Shiprock, New Mexico, joined the team as a sophomore, and mailed his own highlight tape to colleges during a COVID senior year with almost no recruiting resources on the reservation. The offers came back from Division II and Division III schools. He walked on at New Mexico State instead, redshirted, and spent his first year on the practice squad.

Three seasons later he was a first-team All-Conference USA left tackle, playing with a cast on a dislocated thumb, protecting the quarterback in a 34-10 win at Auburn.

Then Kentucky. Twelve starts in the SEC and a team captaincy. According to the NCAA, five Native Americans played Division I football in 2025. Pete was one of the five and the only one in the SEC.

Draft analysts ranked him somewhere between the 36th and 54th best tackle in the class. Seven rounds went by. Nobody called.

Dallas signed him as an undrafted free agent within days. The team's own rookie minicamp video of him was built around one line he said on camera. He had to earn that star.

Saturday in Glendale, thousands of Navajo Nation members made the trip to a Cardinals preseason game to watch a backup tackle. The Navajo Nation president came. When Pete checked in during the fourth quarter, the Navajo section noticed before anyone else did. Six plays, one touchdown drive, and then a chant of his last name loud enough that his teammates cleared the bench so he could face it alone.

His head coach handed him the locker room afterward. He told a room full of men he'd known for four months that fate brought them there as strangers, and this game, this star, this team would make them brothers.

Every locker room speech ever given is about brotherhood. This one came from the guy who spent his whole career as the only one in the room.
