People charge Israel with being a racial state, or a religious state, as if “Jewish” must mean one of those two things.

But being Jewish is neither of these.

Jews are a people — a civilization, a nation, a tribe, a history, a memory, a culture, a faith tradition, a language family, an exile story, a return story, and a shared fate.

That is not some strange exception. That is what peoples are.

Many nations are built from the same kind of thing: ancestry, language, law, religion, custom, territory, myth, trauma, victory, loss, and belonging. Some lean more religious, some more ethnic, some more linguistic, some more civic, some more tribal, some more historical. But nearly all nations are mixtures of these.

So when people pretend that “Jewish” must mean either race or religion, they are flattening an ancient people into categories too small to hold it.

“Jewish” names a people.

And a Jewish state, in that sense, is not some bizarre racial or theocratic invention. It is a national home for the Jewish people — one people among the many peoples of the world.
