"I have to let my unconscious brain do the work because it reacts a lot quicker." 🧠
Devin Cooley chats with @BParkerTV about the psychology behind his unreal performance vs. the Canes.
NLCS MVP Jake Bauers shares how letting go of results helped him find a different level of freedom as a competitor.
"I think what changed for me this year was I stopped caring about results. I started caring about competing. I started caring about being in the moment and getting out of my own way."
Sometimes, the biggest obstacle to performing at your best isn't a lack of preparation or ability.
It's the pressure you place on yourself to produce a particular outcome.
You become so concerned with what you want to happen that you lose touch with what the moment actually requires.
Any performer can unlock a new level when they learn how to be fully invested in the competition without becoming imprisoned by the outcome.

I don’t have all the answers but I love baseball because of the ups and downs and constant grind. So here’s some thoughts for the “X hitting” war that is going on right now.
@BrianKight Not necessarily. But I’d think a lot of coaches make the safer decision for fear of downside, instead of the “crazier” right decision, and live with the consequences. He was probably far past that fear at that point in career, so he could just make the objective, right decision.
Coach Saban’s legacy already cemented, for the most part, by this point. So he could just do what he thought was right.
I wonder how often big moves would be made if that little voice in a coach’s head didn’t say “I can’t do that, I’ll get crushed if it doesn’t work”.
Wow. Never-before-seen locker room footage of Nick Saban telling Jalen Hurts he was turning to Tua Tagovailoa in the 2017 National Championship Game.

White Sox closer Grant Taylor knew exactly what to prioritize after a 4-out save: SLEEP.
Want an edge over the competition? Out-sleep them.
Treat sleep like it’s a sport. 😴💪
I’m convinced that the key to overcoming anything is to shrink the time horizon. Just focus on the next hour. Do one thing that moves you forward. One closed loop. One workout. One hard conversation. Whatever. Do that. Then do it again. Momentum is a byproduct of movement.
Mike Leach shares a must-listen postgame message on resilience, adversity, and failure.
"Nothing is really, really, really fun unless it's hard. Nothing is really fun unless it's hard."
"We've got to embrace that things are gonna be hard. We've got to embrace to be excited when things are hard."
Successful people don't fear obstacles - they embrace them.
"You gotta embrace to be excited about it being hard and playing extremely hard."
"Even if you get way up on somebody, you want to be as hard as you possibly can because you're pushing yourself. And all of a sudden you're making great plays, you're doing things that you've never done before."
Growth requires discomfort. You have to be willing to look bad before you get better.
Then he ended with one line:
"Embrace the fact that it's hard. Never hope that it's easy."
If you only chase what's easy, you'll never become great.
Embrace the hard because that is where growth, success, and character are built.

Found this old file. Sketched this for a client clearly in the low point of this graph. AFTER “Excitement” for new behavior had worn off, but BEFORE the new behavior becomes internalized habit.
That dip is where most changes go to die. Good things come to those that survive it.
Working with athletes on mental performance I’ve seen that trying too hard & playing it safe can both come from fear.
Fear of being a failure.
Fear of being seen as a failure.
They are trying to protect a fragile identity. Help them separate who they are from how they perform.
@thewinningdiff1 If her reaction bothers someone, that person probably doesn’t understand competitive athletics. And, mental performance isn’t about avoiding this.
@SethKindig And one of the biggest gifts a leader can give their team is not making them wonder what version of the leader they are getting each day.
Their communication is consistent
Their demeanor is consistent, relative to the situation
Their expectations are consistent
