The newly established Kenya National Lottery Board (NLB) that is in Uganda for bench-marking with their long-established Ugandan counterpart visited the Kenya High Commission in Kampala earlier today. They briefed me on the progress of rolling out operations of the board established under the Gambling Control Act. I played a significant role in the establishment of the Board when I served as Cabinet Secretary for Sports and Creative Economy.
Today I hosted His Royal Highness Paul Sande Etomeleng Emolot, Emorimor Papa Iteso III, King of the Teso Kingdom and Supreme Leader of the Iteso Cultural Union (Einos Iteso Kopiten), who paid me a courtesy call at the Kenya High Commission in Kampala.
The Emorimor is the custodian of Iteso traditions and the unifying figure for the millions of the community that bestride the Kenya-Uganda border. He promotes peace, mediates disputes, and protects the cultural heritage of the broader Ateker Nation (that includes the Iteso, Turkana, Karamojong of Uganda, Toposa of South Sudan and Nyangatom of Ethiopia/South Sudan).
We discussed a wide range of issues related to the Ateker Nation as a key building block for East African integration, and reviewed unity and peace initiatives that have shaped the Ateker Nation since the landmark 2024 “Reunion”, development interventions across the Ateker communities, education, sports diplomacy, youth employment and empowerment, cross-boarder trade and infrastructure.
My relationship with HRH Papa Iteso III Sande Emolot dates back to 20th February 2022, when I represented then Deputy President and now President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E William Samoei Ruto at the funeral of his predecessor, the late Emorimor Papa Iteso Augustine Kadugala Osuban Lemukol in Serere, Soroti Uganda. Later that year I witnessed his accession to the throne, and we have been good friends and brothers since. Am delighted with the progress of the Iteso and the Ateker Nation under Papa Sande Emolot’s wise stewardship.
Emuria Koliae!
Earlier today in Kampala I presided as Chief Guest a special twin-ceremony for the launch of the 3rd edition of the “Twende Zetu Butiama Pilgrimage Safari” and the unveiling of the African Union Kiswahili Commissioners. Both events bear significant meaning.
The pilgrimage to Butiama, the ancestral home of the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, honors the enduring legacy of this towering son of Africa, whose indelible mark on East Africa and indeed the whole African continent lives on long after his physical demise. This year the unique annual pilgrimage will extend to Akokoro, the birthplace of the late Dr. Apollo Milton Obote, and Ichaweri, Kiambu County, the cradle of the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. This is to celebrate the legacy of the three founding fathers of the original East African Community. The pilgrimage is also an occasion to deepen and tighten the bonds of East African integration, while also promoting trans-national mobility, cross-boarder trade and regional tourism.
Unveiling of the African Union Kiswahili Commissioners breathes fresh impetus into the African Academy of Languages (ACALAN), an initiative of the African Union (AU) to promote African languages. Kiswahili, spoken by some 250 million peoples across Africa, is a top candidate to be the língua franca for the continent, and has the potential to become a key symbol for African unity. Already adopted as an official language of the African Union and duly recognized by UNESCO with July 7 as the International Kiswahili Day, we already have a basis to promote Kiswahili as a top global language.
It is quite fitting that we combined these two events, in honour of the spirit of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, a true pan-Africanist and Kiswahili doyen, alongside his generation of African liberation heroes. Mwalimu Nyerere so much believed in integration that he even offered to delay the independence of Tanganyika so that his country would, alongside Kenya and Uganda, emerge together from the shackles of colonialism as one united East Africa nation.
Kiswahili kitukuzwe. Tuwaenzi Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere na mashujaa wenzake wa ukombozi wa bara letu.
AFRICA HOYEEE!
@KHCKampala
At the @KHCKampala Kenya High Commission in Kampala, our core mission is to deepen and expand the ties that bind Kenya and Uganda, while projecting and promoting Kenya’s strategic interests.
This morning I hosted, respectively, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Uganda Country Representative, Ms Caroline Gathogo, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Uganda Head of Office, Ms Jeptum Bargoria, who paid me courtesy calls.
Uganda is KPA’s number one transit cargo market, with 67% of all cargo handled in Mombasa destined to this country, which is also Kenya’s top bilateral partner across multiple spheres that include trade and peace and security cooperation. We are taking every measure to ensure that we ease the flow of cargo all the way from Mombasa into the Ugandan hinterland. The Northern Corridor should remain the default corridor of choice.
And we are pleased to amplify Kenya’s esteemed status as a United Nations host country. We support the work of UN agencies, including UNODC.
Big up to the Kenya and Uganda national U17 women teams that went head to head this afternoon at the FUFA Stadium (Kadiba) in Mengo, Kampala as the race to the FIFA U17 Women World Cup heats up. This first leg match ended 1-1 with the second leg in Nairobi next week.
I immensely enjoyed the match, alongside FUFA President Hon Moses Magogo Hassim, FKF Vice-President McDonald Mariga and incredible fans that included the superb Kenya Fans Association.
Am proud to have helped build the U17 team that took Kenya to the 2024 FIFA World Cup in the Dominican Republic, the first ever Kenyan team to grace a FIFA World Cup of any complexion. Having missed out on the last edition, the prospect of our flag flying again at the next one is quite exciting. All the best girls.
A delegation of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) paid me a courtesy call today at the Kenya High Commission in Kampala. The delegation included Commissioners Prof. Francis Odhiambo Aduol, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Karen Sorobit and Hassan Noor Hassan.
At the Kenya High Commission in Kampala it has been our delight to host His Excellency Prof. Kithure Kindiki, EGH, Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, who led a high level Kenyan delegation to the swearing-in and inauguration ceremony of His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces of the Republic of Uganda.
We congratulate His Excellency President Museveni, our regional elder statesman who we hold in the highest esteem, as he embarks on the next stage of augmenting his phenomenal legacy for Uganda, best exemplified by stability, national cohesion and shared prosperity for all the peoples of Uganda. May the Pearl of Africa shine even brighter.
Kenya and Uganda enjoy strong ties that bind our two countries through shared history, multiple community bonds, trade, and shared aspirations for peace, security and prosperity for all our peoples. We deeply cherish Uganda as Kenya’s number one bilateral partner in the whole world, and will continue to deepen, broaden and strengthen our special bond.
Congratulations, Your Excellency @KagutaMuseveni@mkainerugaba@UgandaMFA
