Last year we spent ~£1bn turning OFF wind turbines because the grid couldn't cope with the amount of wind energy in the system. We've been digging into how, why, and when this happens

@_HannahRitchie@OurWorldInData This is excellent and helpful. Have you seen https://t.co/4vWJRwULYD that uses the same dataset as a basis for a direct comparison between different meal choices?
@RHarrabin@BawdenTom@NFUtweets@vegsoc Raising awareness of how everyday food choices impact CO2 emissions can help people make informed decisions. Take a look at https://t.co/s0O6l5TXdi

We've been playing around with web3 in the PSL Studio.
@dangerdave has been leading the charge on an internal document with our observations about the technologies and... we decided it was too good not to share publicly. Enjoy!

In case you missed it, yesterday BEIS published a study on the potential of space-based solar power; i.e. sticking a 3km wide satellite in orbit and beaming the power down to an earth-based receiver. /1 https://t.co/wIlZ6SiL7Z
Many carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects promise to remove up to thousands of tons of CO₂, but IPCC AR6 says we need billions of tons (Gt) of CO₂ removed. I think it’s difficult for most people to appreciate the scale difference between thousands, millions, and billions.
@g__j@octopus_energy If you would like a somewhat ostentatious grand version I could script up a cutter to make it out of oak or a selection of different woods. Elegantly showing the negative prices will be a nice design challenge.
I wrote a thing.
Figuring out what we should charge for our subscriptions at GI felt like guesswork, until I came across this survey based method.
I'm sure a lot of startups struggle with this so I wanted to share how we applied it & why it's so useful.

Stabilising our climate at 1.5 deg C without longterm negative carbon emissions is a huge undertaking.
18% reduction in global emissions/year from 2020.
Any delay or even a slower rate commits us to huge negative emissions between 2050 and 2100 - great legacy for our children
Lots of people talking about air capture of CO2. Even Prez candidates. It's a great idea, but it takes a lot of energy. To understand this, let's work out the thermodynamics. [note: nerd twitter thread] 1/
(1/7) So apparently some (I hope very few) people online are using the fact that I am the primary developer of the eht-imaging software library (https://t.co/n7djw1r9hY) to launch awful and sexist attacks on my colleague and friend Katie Bouman. Stop.
