When AI replaces a Kenyan employee, KRA loses the PAYE it was collecting from that worker.

I came across an interesting argument from Scott Bellow this morning.

He says that the time is ripe for KRA to start taxing AI agents and robots.

He argues that,

AI agents like Grok, ChatGPT and Claude can now do real jobs.

They complete actual tasks, replace human employees and sometimes do the work just as well, or even better.

At the end of the month, someone pays for their services through subscription fees.

Now, human employees pay PAYE tax (pay as you earn) to KRA.

But when a company fires an employee and replaces them with an AI agent, KRA loses the PAYE it was collecting from that employee.

Scott's argument is that the AI agent replacing that worker should also be taxed as a worker under PAYE.

Example
Say the AI agent costs Sh50,000 a month.
KRA would tax that amount using the PAYE bands.

The agent pays Sh9,784 in tax and takes home Sh40,216.
KRA eats Sh9,784.

Meanwhile, the hustlers have also joined the chat. They want to know whether these AI agents will also be forced to pay the Housing Levy so the government can continue building them affordable mansions.
