@LukeBornheimer@scottmace2@sfbike@SFMTA_Muni Yes, except bike lanes are also (class II) bikeways. So it’s not quite correct to say all bikeways are optional. Physically separated bikeways (Class I and Class IV) are optional. But note that you can legally leave a BL for many reasons, like when approaching an intersection.
@sfbike@SFMTA_Muni Please do not use “bike lane” to refer to facilities that are not Class II bike lanes. Bike lane use is mandatory per CVC 21208, but Class I bike paths and Class IV separated bikeways are optional use. Referring to a facility as a bike lane implies mandatory use.
Just "eye contact" isn't sufficient even when that someone seems to be looking at you. Get a response; a wave, smile/frown, wink, gesture - even a honk can assure us that at least they actually saw us. Don't trust. Verify!
Congratulations to St. Paul for improving bicycling! Now some of us would like to see Shared Lane Markings in that adjacent general travel lane because sometimes that's a better choice for bicycling.
With a 2021 City Ratings score of 46, St. Paul, Minnesota, doesn’t seem like a particularly impressive city for biking...but it was most improved from 2020! 🙌 Here’s why:

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill isn’t transformative overall, but is an important step in the right direction compared to the current laws and funding for people who bike and walk. Read more on our blog about what is — and isn't — in the BIB for bikes » https://t.co/PAmkxnmfAc

@ban_SUVs Unfortunately bicycling in American motor vehicle traffic requires heightened awareness and skill. With easily learned knowledge and acquired skills, bicycling can be more enjoyable, safer, and a great alternative to car use.
@c_rless@ban_SUVs Newbies (maybe anyone) will benefit from learning more about bicycling. Learning from others is better than learning from our mistakes.
@JakeGeorge1839 @TheJakeSchmidt@ban_SUVs There are scary roadways and there are safer and easy to ride roadways. Choose carefully. And, acquire bicycling knowledge and skills that are necessary for riding in with American motorists.
@TheJakeSchmidt@ban_SUVs Bicycling in the city or anywhere can be safer for you when you become better informed about bicycling in with other traffic, and more skilled at effective cycling.
@ban_SUVs The photo is showing what we call a Buffered Bike Lane; a facility type that helps to discourage close passing. Someone is confused to think this provides "protection" from crashes.
@skttrbrain I can't tell from reading about this if anyone reported the apparently criminal behavior to the local police? I believe that police are supposed to accept and file reports of criminal traffic misbehavior; having a record of previous reports of violations may help in future.
