The Irish government’s agreement to supply Russia with vast quantities of alumina is even more concerning than it first appears :
Australia banned the export of alumina to Russia, citing its critical role in the Kremlin's war machine. Meanwhile, Ireland’s exports of alumina to Russia have skyrocketed since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, now providing 99% of all alumina from the EU.
Ireland also approves approx 95% of all Russian visa applications - an extremely high percentage.
Ireland's Russian embassy in Dublin is widely viewed by security sources as a hub for Russian intelligence (GRU/SVR) and influence operations in Western Europe. It has an unusually large staff relative to bilateral ties, and Ireland's neutrality, location (back door to the UK), and open society make it attractive for hybrid activities
Ireland defense for supplying roughly 90% of EU alumina exports to Russia is that the EU never sanctioned alumina.
But when it came to Israel, Ireland didn't wait for the EU.
Dublin pushed ahead with its own Occupied Territories legislation, openly challenging the EU's common trade policy and arguing that moral considerations required action.
Apparently, "we can't act without Brussels" applies to Russia, but not to Israel.
Interesting standard.
I asked a local councillor if the russian refinery here in Ireland should be sanctioned.
He said yes, if it was supplying Israel.
But Russia? No.
This is Ireland’s sanctions hypocrisy in 90 seconds.
@SrSittingBull Always liked following Aussie football from afar (I guess I'm a bit weird as I want to see the game grow in Oz/Canada/USA). Hope you get some fun moments in this upcoming World Cup. Australia were great to watch in '06.
@astuaryking@TheStatsSaint@Thunda007@ChrisG87UTB I was just making a point in relation to something you said, and judging by your first response and your demeanor since, that has got you, to use your words, rattled and defensive. Wishing you a good season ahead, buddy.
@astuaryking@TheStatsSaint@Thunda007@ChrisG87UTB It was directly in response to your "relegated a load of times" - it's funny because Boro have been relegated more times in almost half the amount of PL seasons. Just admit that you didn't realise that fact before you showed your arse.
I know it’s become pretty cliche and cringey to talk about at this point but if you’re under like 25 I cannot stress enough how one time Obama wore a tan suit and people spent a week arguing over whether or not it was demeaning to the Oval Office and they were serious about it.
As much as this whole situation reflects poorly on #saintsfc, Henry Winter has consistently positioned himself as some kind of moral judge, jury and executioner, and it’s getting boring now.
I hope he keeps the same energy for the countless other clubs that do this.
