Happy 66th Independence Day, Somalia🇸🇴! We join the nation in celebrating the resilience of the Somali people and renew our commitment to build a sustainable agrifood system and a #BetterLife#BetterProduction#BetterNutrition and #BetterEnvironment for all.
.@FAOSWALIM Technical Advisor, @ugoleonardi attended the IMCC meeting convened by @MOPEDIC_PL, chaired by DG Abdulkadir Abdidahir. The meeting reviewed IMC's progress & charted a path to financial self-reliance, leveraging data platforms to sustain services beyond donor support.
The hypocrisy of the world is glaring. They threw stones at Qatar 2022, yet stay cowardly silent while this US administration enforces discriminatory bans that undermine the very spirit of fair play. Merit doesn't matter when politics takes the field. 🇸🇴⚽️
#StandWithOmarArtan
A historic moment stolen. Omar Artan, the pride of Somalia and Africa’s Referee of the Year, was set to break barriers at the #WorldCup2026.
Instead, he’s been denied entry by the US, leaving our youth without a symbol of what’s possible.
#StandwithOmarArtan
Where is the voice of our politicians? They remain silent while the dreams of our generation are crushed by failed policies. This is what decades of failed leadership and a weak passport cost our young generation.

"This is shameful. It's disgusting. It's purely racist and only a weak country would behave like this." -@hasanthehun on the racist travel bans on athletes participating in FIFA. America is showing their ass again. Disgusting as fuck.
Somali referee Omar Artan, who was set to be the first from his country to officiate at the World Cup finals, has been denied entry to the United States.
SNBS is honoured to participate in the Global Data Festival 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya, convened under the theme “Powering Innovation, Resilience and Partnership through Data and Technology.”The Festival brought together more than a thousand participants from across the world, comprising National Statistical Offices, policymakers, development partners, researchers and technology leaders, to explore how modern data systems can strengthen governance, accelerate development and improve decision-making in an increasingly complex world.
As part of the global dialogue and representing Somalia, SNBS Director General, Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed, participated in the high-level panel discussion on “The Future of Census: Digitization and Global Pathways to the 2030 Round.” The session examined how countries are modernizing census methodologies through digital technologies, geospatial innovations and integrated data systems to produce more timely, accurate and inclusive population statistics. Discussions highlighted the growing imperatives around leveraging technology to capture all population in national statistical systems.
During the panel, Dr. Abdisalam shared Somalia’s ongoing efforts to build a modern census ecosystem and strengthen the foundations for evidence-based planning and development. He stressed the notable progress SNBS has made towards the application of geospatial population estimation techniques, remote sensing technologies, GIS-based mapping and the development of digital enumeration frameworks to support preparations for the 2030 Round of Population and Housing Censuses. These innovations represent a major departure from traditional cartographic approaches and are helping to establish a more robust statistical infrastructure capable of supporting national planning, service delivery and development monitoring.
The discussion also underscored the importance of census data as a cornerstone of national development. For Somalia, where the last completed population census was conducted in 1975 and no fully disseminated national population benchmark has existed for decades, ongoing census modernization efforts are critical for strengthening governance, improving resource allocation and supporting implementation of the Vision 2060, National Transformation Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals. SNBS continues advance innovative statistical solutions through robust domestic and global partnerships to build a modern, inclusive and resilient National Statistical System. @AbdisalamHumbul@abdirahm_omar

We’ve been told what conservation should look like for too long.
Meet Nadine Kilala, an AWF Fellow, as she elaborates on why we need to stop following outside scripts and start writing our own.
It’s time for African conservation to reflect our realities. What does "community-led conservation" look like to you? Let’s know in the comments!
Moderate rains improving conditions in the north, but severe drought persists in south & central. Rising Shabelle River levels pose localized flood risks particularly along breakage points while heat & uneven rainfall continue to stress livelihoods.

Every tree standing today is someone's deliberate choice.
On this International Day of Forests, we celebrate the people who made that choice and have kept making it.
In Tanzania's Kilombero Valley, Sisters Eusebia Punduka and Narisisa Kilenga are transforming how communities relate to the land. Through the supported training programs, they've brought more than 600 farmers into agroforestry and sustainable agriculture. This has led to the restoration of the Mngeta sub-catchment, one farm at a time.
In Kenya's Taita Taveta County, Grade 9 student Josephine Kililo didn't wait to grow up before becoming a conservationist. She channeled her passion into action, and this year, more than 600 students and teachers showed up to plant trees alongside her. It started with one teenager who cared.
In Rwanda, community eco-guard Olivier Ndagijimana is on the frontlines at #VolcanoesNationalPark, protecting forests from illegal logging. Local vigilance is what stands between a healthy forest and a disappearing one.
Forests only thrive when people choose to protect them and in return, they sustain us right back.

Congratulations #AWFWallFellows Class of 2025!
Today, we celebrate the graduation of the AWF-Wall Youth Leadership Program Class of 2025. This cohort, comprising 16 Policy Fellows and 14 Leadership and Management Fellows from 21 countries, joins a distinguished network of 108 alumni equipped to enact transformative change across Africa.
In their keynote addresses, @AWF_Official's Charly Facheux and @UNEP_Africa's Levis Kavagi emphasized that today is merely the beginning of a lifelong journey to implement the rigorous lessons learned over this nine-month period. During heartfelt reflections, fellows described the program as both exhilarating and challenging, and promised to uphold what they learnt in their respective fellowships.
Special recognition was given to two "Fellows of the Year", one from each track, whose words of encouragement underscored the profound sense of community this program upholds. We look forward to seeing these vibrant leaders shape the continent’s future.

#FAOSWALIM enhanced Somalia’s capacity in land suitability analysis for major crops, training staff from @NBS_Somalia, @imcsomalialand and @imcpuntland. Delivered through 3 weeks online plus 1 week practical, the course supports evidence-based agricultural planning.
Groundwater update: Drought is exacerbating dependence on groundwater for HHs & livestock in #Somalia. Poor Deyr rains + high demand are straining aquifers North & parts of the South, signalling a tough Jilaal. Monitoring & timely repairs are critical.
