A.4 Our pathfinder (Anxiety/Depression) was designed for kids aged 8-18. We wanted our intended audience to be able to reach out and speak up about what’s bothering them by providing sources that would be available to them at their local library. #is445
This sounds awesome! I feel like a lot of the time when important conversations are had they don’t always invite people who could really benefit and learn from it. Inviting kids on to ask questions is a wonderful concept! #is445
A.3 One of our books was “Put Your Worries Away” which shone the spotlight of kids from all different backgrounds experiencing anxiety or existing on every page. It was a great resource to show how everyone, adult or kid, gets anxious no matter what’s happening to them. #is445
I can imagine this would be inspiring to a wide range of people! When you discussed it in your group’s presentation it seemed like a great source to introduce to kids who are ballerinas or have vitiligo themselves! #is445
A.2 Taking Flight increases the diversity of the lib. coll. b/c it highlights the life of Michaela DePrince who was one of only a handful of dark-skinned ballerinas. She also has a skin condition called vitiligo which causes white patches and spots. A truly inspiring story #is445
This book is a great resource for kids to understand what’s happening in their heads but also great for their adults who want to know more about their worries. It drives communication between adult and child.
A.2 One of our sources for Anxiety/Depression was “What to Do When You’re Scared and Lonely”. This book guides kids through what worries are, where they come from, and how to make them go away. Written by a doctor of clinical psychology, this book is inclusive of all kids. #is445
A.1 Nonfiction books can help achieve equity in library services by being diverse and global resources. By representing the diverse population you are serving with your collection, staff & public learn more about diverse groups & can set about creating an equal environment #is445
A.4 My main concern is that a large number of people doing evaluation are librarians that have similar educational history. I would be concerned that there would be very similar ways of evaluating informational books in every library across the country. #is445
It’s so easy to blindly assume or go with your gut on something as “simple” as ordering a book but you’re absolutely right, the more questions we ask from the start the more of a positive impact we’ll make. #is445
A.3: Asking questions of ourselves while selecting nonfiction resources is essential to making an impactful selection. We need to ask the who, what, where, and when questions but more importantly the why question in order to allow the resources to really impact our lives. #is445
A.3 With librarians using self-questioning techniques there is a greater chance of informational books that speak about the diversity of our world and represent people from every walk of life #is445
A.2 A controversial nonfiction book could be “And Tango Makes Three” which is based off the true story of two male penguins who bonded during mating season and hatched a penguin egg together. Many guardians have complained about the books topic of same sex relationships #is445
A.1 Selection in kidlit to me seems mostly be on behalf of the parent or guardian. There could be a certain subject that parents don’t want their children learning about. Self-censorship would be something that librarians themselves done want to include in their collection #is445
Learned so much last week discussing @susankuklin’s many books with the author herself! Wonderful hearing how she conducts interviews and really cares about the individuals she interviews. I love that she is still in contact with the participants of We Are Here To Stay. #is445
Learned so much about @susankuklin’s work while we were lucky enough to speak to her for #is445 today! She’s been doing important work writing for those whose voices need to be heard for decades now.
Read “How My Familt Lives in America” and “Families” by @susankuklin for #is445 this week. Both great books that introduce an array of loving families to kids! Books like these are very important to share with children nowadays!
